Chris Holder is a collegiate strength and conditioning coach professionally for over 15 years having worked at Eastern Kentucky University, Appalachian State University and San Jose State University. He is in his second stint and eighth year at Cal Poly in beautiful San Luis Obispo, CA.
The 2000 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University majored in physical education and earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from Cal Poly in 2005. In February 2012, Holder completed his doctorate in Chinese Medical Qigong Therapy. Under the tutelage of world famous Qigong Grand Master Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson, Dr. Holder conducted groundbreaking research on the effects of Medical Qigong Therapy with athletes in competition. This research has spawned other works and additional studies on the effects of this ancient medical practice and its impact on athletes and athletic performance.
Holder received his American doctorate from the International Institute of Medical Qigong in Monterey, CA, and is also licensed in China to practice medicine from The Western District Qigong Science and Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Institute in Beijing, China.
I am currently a collegiate football player who has been training with Chris Holder over the past 10 months. Having him as my instructor has been an absolute pleasure. His training has not only drastically changed me physically, but also mentally. Before being instructed by Coach Holder I felt that I lacked the athletic ability to elevate my football playing abilities to an elite level. Since working with him, I feel that I can now compete with the best from around the country. This is all due to his clear, concise, educated instruction, as well as his continuous and consistent effort to be the best coach he can be. For me personally, it was very clear that Coach Holder is very educated in strength and conditioning based off his credentials, and experience in the field. What has surprised me the most is his ability to connect and motivate all the different types of student athletes we have at my school. His ability to communicate his knowledge to young adults, and instruct us in a clear way is something I have yet to experience with any other coach or instructor. The biggest difference Coach Holder has made in my strength and conditioning training, is the way he has educated me on the way my body functions during training and football. Thanks to him, I now understand why I am doing certain movements and how to do them. Not only that, but I am now much more familiar with how my body functions on a day to day basis. When he instructs me on an exercise, it is not simply just to do it, the purpose of the exercise is explained, and how it translates onto the field is clear. Lastly, Coach Holder's approach has increased my confidence drastically. Knowing why I am training a certain way, and understanding my body on a functional level, has allowed me to unlock my potential physically, which has given me the confidence to take on any opponent. Being instructed by somebody who constantly does his best to prepare you as an athlete has been one of the best experiences of my life. Put very simply, Chris Holder is an amazing instructor, who has had a tremendous positive impact on my life.
