First introduced to Russian kettlebell training by renowned Bruce Lee protege, Sifu Daniel Inosanto, Dr. Mark Cheng has had the honor of receiving almost all of his kettlebell training directly from the RKC Founder, Pavel Tsatsouline, himself and earned his initial RKC certification in April 2006, following with his RKC II in June 2007. He was honored to serve as an RKC assistant instructor at the April 2007, September 2007, February 2008, April 2008, May 2008 (Denmark), February 2009, & September 2009 RKCs and the Tactical Strength "law enforcement and military only" closed courses in June & December 2007. Dr. Cheng has also thrice assisted his mentor at the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) kettlebell workshops in Irvine, California.

Pavel Tsatsouline honored Dr. Cheng with promotion to RKC Team Leader on December 17, 2007. Dr. Cheng made his debut serving as Team Leader in May 2008 at the first RKC event in Budapest, Hungary. Since then, he has served as a Team Leader at the first Los Angeles RKC at UCLA in August 2008, twice served as an assistant instructor to Gray Cook and Brett Jones at the CK-FMS (Corrective Kettlebell - Functional Movement Specialist) certification workshop in St. Paul, and taught as a Team Leader at the 4th annual RKC instructor certification in Copenhagen, Denmark in May 2009 & the inaugural San Diego RKC in August 2009. Dr. Cheng has also collaborated with Gray Cook and Master RKC Brett Jones on the "Kalos Sthenos - Kettlebells from the Ground-Up" DVD and manual. He is honored to serve as a teaching faculty member of the FMS Team and works closely with Gray Cook & Dr. Lee Burton on clinical consultations with elite athletes.

Dr. Cheng has found kettlebell training an unparallelled means of rehabilitation and PRE-habilitation for a wide variety of conditions that seemed to plateau with other types of treatment and exercise. He employs Gray Cook's Functional Movement System technologies along with specific kettlebell training exercises for rehabilitation and prehabilitation in his Santa Monica, California acupuncture and Chinese orthopedic medicine clinic, the Chung-Hua Institute.

While he trained his wife, Dr. Courtney Mizuhara-Cheng, RKC II, as a means of getting back into perfect athletic shape after the birth of their son, Dr. Cheng's focus is far wider than simple fat loss. He enjoys researching the combative tactical applications of kettlebell training exercises, as well as the rehab & prehab medical applications of the RKC system.

Dr. Cheng teaches kettlebell rehabilitative fitness, RKC System strength training, and Chinese martial arts on a private and semi-private basis in the West Los Angeles area, encompassing Brentwood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Pacific Palisades. He also teaches monthly kettlebell workshops at the world famous Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts, as well as training classes for sports teams, elite athletes, and special groups such as tactical operators, martial arts schools, and corporations across the US and internationally. Dr. Cheng and Sr RKC Jon Engum set the groundwork for the Hard Style RKC kettlebell training system to grow and flourish in Seoul, South Korea with a series of internationally attended workshops and high level meetings in March 2009. In January 2010, he brought the Hardstyle kettlebell methods & FMS screening technologies to Adelaide, South Australia, to rave reviews and conducted the first FMS certification courses Down Under later in November of that year.

Dr. Cheng's teaching methods are very precise, clear, and focused, yet constantly encouraging - geared towards developing proper, safe, and powerful form in a minimum of time to yield maximum results. He has also successfully prepared several individuals for the RKC instructors' certification with his RKC high-density training sessions. His Kettlebells Los Angeles instructors group boasts over a dozen certified RKCs on staff and has what is perhaps the strictest quality control requirements around. If you live in the Southern California area and wish to prepare for the RKC instructors' course, the RKC high-density prep course will ensure your success!

If you're not necessarily interested in becoming an instructor, but just want to enjoy the benefits of kettlebell training, then drop by the highly popular 7AM Sunday kettlebells class. With the unparallelled energy of dozens of kettlebell enthusiasts and about a dozen RKC-certified instructors on hand, you can kickstart your energy levels and metabolism and begin your week with a return to vitality.

To contact Dr. Cheng to schedule a workshop for your company, school, team, or group or for more information about rehabilitative training sessions, please visit his website at www.kettlebellslosangeles.com or his blog at kettlebellslosangeles.blogspot.com to see when his workshop tour is coming to a town or country near you! 10/10 A Teacher with brain and heart

By Matteo / Sherman Oaks, CA

It's already an honor and a pleasure to know Dr. Cheng; to have him as an instructor is superlative; he makes you feel welcome to his lessons, and he constantly encourages you, he motivates you, he patiently explains what you do wrong without making you feel stupid, he is contagious with his passion for kettlebells -- and first and foremost he teaches you The Right Way to do every exercise. Safety for his students is paramount, and that alone is something you can't put a price on. He always teaches you with his brain and with his heart: a rarity, among teachers.

10/10 Outstanding!!

By John Spezzano / Los Angeles, CA

I am a life long martial artist and teach martial arts for a living. With many years under high level instructors, I am VERY picky when I choose a new instructor. Dr. Mark Cheng is an OUTSTANDING kettlebells coach. His understanding of the human body from being a doctor of Chinese medicine, martial arts from a life time of combative study and instruction, and a specific understanding of Russian kettlebells combine in such a way to make him a truly incredible instructor. I am constantly impressed by his detailed and motivating instruction and have and will continue to recommended him to anyone interested in kettlebell training.

10/10 attention to detail

By David O'Donnell / Burbank, Ca

Dr.Cheng's approach to teaching and trainning is highly motivating.
He has a commitment and an attention to detail that I admire.
It's a pleasure to know and train with Dr.Cheng

10/10 of Art & of Science

By Ben Fung, sDPT / San Diego, CA

It is truly an honor and privilege to study under Sifu Mark Cheng. I first met Dr. Cheng at a martial arts seminar in San Diego where Sifu Cheng introduced me to KB's. Since studying with Dr. Cheng, I found his knowledge and understanding of the arts to be immeasurable and his application of science (such as biomechanics and anatomy, which are inseparable from KB training and Martial Arts training) to be impeccable.

His passion and knowledge has spurred me on towards scientific & medical research of KB training.

My honor and thanks to Sifu Dr. Mark Cheng.

10/10 Impressive experience

By Nate / San Carlos, CA

I had the honor and pleasure of attending Doc Cheng's presentation about the four knots at Hardstyle Ventura this past weekend (Nov 6&7 2010). Doc presented the material and gave us time to practice the movements to understand what our clients should feel when working with individuals who are "quad dominant" and lack t-spine mobility. It also helps that his presentation is entertaining!

Anyone can put clients through a beat down session but not everyone has the ability, knowledge and experience to improve a client's mobility so they can enjoy life outside of a gym. Doc has these attributes and more. If you ever have an opportunity to hear him present or train with him, seize that chance!

I look forward to working with him again soon. Thanks Doc!

10/10 Great Teacher

By Fabio Campisi / Siena, ITALY

I had the opportunity to work with Doc Mark Cheng during my RKC certification in San Diego. Great trainer, great teacher, great technique and outstanding coaching skill!
I really learned a lot during my 3 days course, mainly thanks to him.

I hope to see you soon,
SEI UN GRANDE DOC!

10/10 My goal was to learn from the best!

By Nancy Caceres / Duarte, California

Before meeting Dr. Cheng in person I did a lot of research on kettlebells and instructors in the Los Angeles area. Intimidated by all the information and disappointed from other instructors I finally arrived to one of Dr. Cheng's sessions. I went home knowing that with his direct approach and simple way of teaching I was going to learn from the best.

I just past my HKC and it was amazing! Everything Dr. Cheng taught me from technique to safety was a carbon copy of the instructors that day, which confirmed to me that I was learning from the best. I am excited to be one of his students, he inspires me to lift heavier and to become mentally stronger. Dr. Cheng is a funny guy, but not to be confused with serious training. Anybody want to learn from the best, He's your man

Thank you for your strength and wisdom

10/10 Great teacher!

By Jay H. / Seattle, WA

I was in LA recently for an extended stay and was lucky enough to have a private lesson with Doc. We went right to the fundamentals of the dead lift and swing and my technique improved greatly. Very fortunate to have that experience.

10/10 GET UP!

By Alex Hugi / Minneapolis, MN

At the HKC on 4/11/2010! We learned the Get Up for the best! Mark is a great instructor and it was an honor to learn from him!

10/10 When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

By Nathan Senter, RKC I, CK-FMS / Chicago, IL

Humility is described as the quality of being humble; modest, not proud, doing something out of the goodness of your heart, not for yourself. Humility lacks ego. It is this singular quality that describes the approach and method of Doctor Mark Cheng. He was an instructor when I went through the RKC in 2007. He was there to teach again when I went through the CK-FMS weekend. And this last weekend I had the distinct pleasure of working with him at an HKC Certification here in Chicago. When someone has put so much time and effort into their craft, the knowledge is dispensed with an ease that lends itself to genius. Doc would never admit to this due to his humble nature. To me, it is his greatest attribute. It is what makes him so approachable when you are searching for the answer. He speaks TO you. He looks you in the eye and makes doubly sure that he has answered your question fully. Doc doesn't over-instruct. He observes, processes, and dispenses only what you need to get to that next level. He engages you, challenges you, and ultimately demands perfection in a way that inspires you to give it your all. Again, he would never admit to this, for he is a humble man, a gracious host of knowledge, and the type of instructor I aspire to be. Thanks Doc.

Managing Injury, Improving Fundamental Movement and Building Strength—Through Tai Chi, FMS and the RKC

Jan 24, 2012 07:00 PM

Dragon Door: Dr. Mark Cheng, it's good to talk to you. How did you first discover kettlebells? Dr. Mark Cheng: I first discovered kettlebells through one of my patients, a gentleman by the name of Dan Inosanto. He's the senior most student of Bruce Lee. One of his senior students (an RKC) set up a training session for him to train with Pavel. Inosanto asked me, "Doc, would you mind coming to this workout—one of my students arranged a workout with a Russian weightlifting coach...
