PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Joe Sansalone is a lifelong athlete who earned his black belt in Kuoshu style Chinese Kickboxing in 1996 from the Baltimore Martial Arts Academy. He was a full contact fighter from 1994-2000 and has studied Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts.

He began his career as a fitness professional in 1996, serving as the head personal trainer for the Columbia Gym.  In the 15 years that followed, Joe has developed an impeccable reputation as an exceptional strength coach, personal trainer and fitness educator by acquiring the highest levels of education and expertise the industry offers, and by enhancing performance, reducing pain, eliminating injuries and getting extraordinary results for the athletes and clients he works with.

Joe has built and developed a loyal clientèle and strength and conditioning business through his passion, integrity, ethics, knowledge, advanced methodology and systematic approach to training. In fact, Joe’s very first client, Lina Jarboe, is still an active member of the OPTI program!

Joe has trained countless athletes, fitness professionals, personal trainers, fitness enthusiasts and post-rehab/injury clientèle, both young and old. His clients have seen both measurable and immeasurable success, and have continued to refer family members and friends to the OPTI program. Many of Joe’s clients have gone on to become strength coaches and personal trainers themselves because of the education, results and passion for fitness he has instilled in them.

Through the results Joe’s OPTI program creates for its clients, OPTI has developed a reputation among local physical therapists, chiropractors, athletes and his strength and conditioning peers as one of the top training programs and systems in the industry.

Joe’s professional certifications and qualifications include:

  • Certified Personal Trainer through The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the American Council on Exercise (ACE)
  • Certified Russian Kettlebell Instructor (RKC)
  • Certified Functional Movement Systems Instructor (FMS)
  • Certified Nutrition Specialist through Lifestyle Management Associates (LMA)
  • Certified Kettlebell-Functional Movement Specialist (CK-FMS)
  • USA Weightlifting Certified Olympic Weightlifting Coach (USAW-Level 1)
  • Graduate of the prestigious 4 phase performance enhancement and rehabilitation mentorship program at the world-renowned Athletes Performance Institute facility in Scottsdale, Arizona

In addition, Joe attends hours of continuing education courses every year in an effort to provide the most up to date and credible information in the industry.

Joe has developed the Optimum Performance Training Institute methodology, mission, and vision through his 15 years of experience and study. He has attended all four phases of mentorship at the world-renowned Athlete’s Performance Institute in Arizona, and has returned to assist in teaching that same mentorship program in 2008.

He has been an assistant instructor at several seminars for professional development and certification including the Functional Movement Screen Certification course with Gray Cook in 2007, and the Hardstyle Kettlebell Certification with Brett Jones in 2009 and 2010. In addition he was the head instructor for a research project involving the FMS from 2006-2007.

This passion for teaching led Joe to become an approved Continuing Education (CEU) provider for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) in 2007.  He has taught several workshops and seminars for CEU’s including a joint project on the integration of Physical Therapy Modalities and Functional Training with Manual Physical Therapist Karen Johnson, Understanding the Functional Movement Screen and Corrective Exercise, Understanding Optimal Nutrition and several Kettlebell seminars with Neghar Fonooni.

One of Joe's most memorable teaching experiences to date came in 2011 when he and Neghar Fonooni went to Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) to teach a Kettlebell Training for Performance Enhancement seminar for Mike Boyle and his very accomplished strength coach staff.   Mike Boyle was one of the first and most influential instructors in Joe's professional career over the past 10 years, so having the chance to go to his facility and teach for him and his staff was an amazing experience.

Joe continues to develop and teach new workshops for professionals in the community, allowing them to further their education in the field. In addition to professional workshops, he has developed and taught a 16 week mentorship program for strength coaches and personal trainers and has become recommended by Towson University and Prescott University as an internship provider for Exercise Physiology Bachelor degree candidates.

Joe has also gained national recognition for his writing on the strengthcoach.com forums and has been featured on the strenghtcoach.com educational podcast and plans to write more articles in the future.

Optimum Performance Training Institute has grown into an elite system of performance enhancement training, injury reduction and pain elimination solutions.  OPTI is held and will always continue to be held to the highest professional standards the industry offers.

10/10 Outstanding Coach

By Jason Pak / Somerville, USA

My name is Jason RKC, FMS, USAW, NASM-CPT, CES, and I first heard Joe on the Strengthcoach.com podcast concerning shoulder packing. I was so impressed by his knowledge through the podcast and forum posts that I enlisted his help online to coach me for the RKC. Anyone who has trained someone online can attest to the fact that it is not an easy task. Yet despite this, Joe's attention to detail and his expert ability to articulate exactly what he wants helped me tremendously to progress in my training.
When I met him in person at my RKC in Chicago as an assistant team leader, it further sealed how much of a consummate professional he was. He welcomed any and all questions I had for him throughout the event and answered them thoroughly. His passion and knowledge for not only kettlebells, but all things strength and conditioning clearly shines through from the moment you talk to him and I couldn't have been happier to have him as a coach and a mentor.

Thanks Joe!

10/10 Awesome!

By Ryan Evans / Fulton, United States

I am a college athlete playing football at Towson University and from my training with Joe I improved in every aspect of fitness. I thought his training methods were unbelievable! He's inspiring, and teaches great mechanics for strength training and speed work. He makes personalized workout plans that fit your body type and specific goals. He really wants to see you succeed and actually cares about seeing you improve. I trained with him the winter and summer before college and transformed my body to prepare for college football. If you are looking for a trainer to get you to the next level Joe is your guy.

10/10 Knowledge Skills = Joe

By Les Raymond / Fulton, USA

As a cerified personal trainer, and HKC, I was looking for the right person to help me advance my own training and prepare for my upcoming RKC cert. After spending just a short time with Joe it was clear he had tremendous knowledge of movement and training, along with a natural ability to teach.others. Joe has helped clarify my path of training and has boosted my confidence towards meeting my fitness goals. I look forward to progressing through his teachings and would reccomend his services to others.

10/10 Exceptional

By Karla M / Maryland, United States

Joe is an incredibly talented and forward-thinking individual who has continued to remain several steps ahead of the curve when it comes to the fitness industry. I've had the pleasure of training with Joe on and off over the past 10 years. As a former collegiate-level volleyball player (and lifelong competitive athlete in many other disciplines), I first came to Joe when my third (!) lower back surgery was on the horizon. Years of incorrect movement patterns and underlying degenerative discs had led to chronic muscular and nerve pain that resisted all attempts at conventional therapies. Starting with a simple "I can help you," Joe led me down a path that I thought would never again be possible. He gave me back some of what I had lost all those years ago; for the first time in many years, I could not only move without pain but I could also advance in my training. And even when my training needs changed (Joe worked with me through several pregnancies), Joe did not shy away from the challenge and continued to develop a safe and effective individualized program.

Joe taught me about relative strength and functional mobility. His complete understanding of the biomechanics behind each movement he taught was, and continues to be, unparallelled. Joe has never stopped increasing his knowledge base and has never once become stagnant in his teaching methods.

I cannot speak highly enough of Joe's skills and professionalism and have no doubt that his expertise will continue to garner him much-deserved recognition in this industry.

10/10 Top Notch

By Ryan Zuver / York, United States

I first heard of Joe Sansalone as a member of strengthcoach.com. I heard his shoulder packing podcast and found out he trained in Maryland. I knew this was a good oppurtunity for me to learn from the best. I first attended his and Neghar's HKC workshop in September with no kettlebell experience. I immediately was hooked on the concept and knew I wanted to learn more as well as sharing what I learned with my clients. His attention to detail was nothing I have seen before. I could tell he really believed and loved what he was doing.
I am now getting ready to take on the RKC when it comes to Virginia in May. He actually told me that there was a workshop there. Without hesitation, I knew if I wanted any chance to really do well with this and learn lots of information along the way, Joe Sansalone was the guy.
In the short time I have known Joe, I have learned a lot about myself not only physically but as a trainer myself, I have lots of work to do to even be near his level. It's a privelage to be working with him to say the least.

10/10 Mentor, coach, friend

By Christine Norris, HKC / Annapolis, USA

I came to Joe in hopes to learn more about kettlebell training and to overall become a better trainer. Joe has spent (and continues to spend) countless hours educating me in areas such as movement prep, core training, and strength and conditioning. To me, this is absolutely priceless. Joe is quite possibly the most knowledgeable person I have had the pleasure to work with.

After seven months of working with Joe, I feel more confident as a coach and more confident in my own training. I have also become more comfortable in teaching clients how properly execute the deadlift, swing and Turkish Get Up, just to name a few. Among several things I love about Joe, I love that there are no stupid questions and all mistakes are made into a teachable moment. Joe educates you when you are wrong and praises you when you are right.

Joe's enthusiasm is contagious. He welcomes every person that walks into OPTI with open arms and immediately makes them feel as though they are the only person in facility. No matter who he is coaching at the time, you can be sure that Joe gives them his undivided attention until they walk out of the door. Joe is more than willing to help other trainers prepare for certifications such as the FMS and RKC (to name a few).

Every time I see Joe, I look forward what he has to say. I am sincerely grateful to have the chance to work with Joe and cannot imagine working with anyone else.

10/10 GRATEFUL FOR HIS PRESENCE IN MY LIFE AND WORLD

By John Owens / Columbia, Maryland, United States

Got to age 65 exhausted - a primary caregiver for decade, sat way too many years as a psychotherapist. Decided to recovery, get healthy. The program - eliminate toxins, eat healthy, supplement and exercise.

Chipped away daily on all four areas. Lots of work and progress. After first year ran a mile nonstop, it felt great. Needed help to progress. Had hip restrictions from when interstate trucker fell asleep and creamed me. Hired Joe Sansalone thrice weekly for personal training. Began rehab and training.

Eight years later, I squat deeply, fold from the hips, balance on one leg, do weighted push-ups, pull-ups, dead-lift body weight plus 30 pounds, swing hefty kettlebells, do Turkish get-ups, do interval cardio on the slide-board, agility ladder, the curve and bike. No medications. Joints remain sound, stability is in place, huge strength gains, movement has fluidity and power. Powerful gains, while aging. Program outcome, success.

Lots of awe and admiration for this young trainer. Every step he exceed expectations.
Have watched him progress from questing youth to a mature man deeply dedicated to his clients, craft and profession.

His intentions are gracious yet intensely focused, his follow through dedicated and consistent, his intelligence for human movement is profound, his adaption of general information to each unique body is brilliant, his heart is kind, his will resolute, his own physical conditioning balanced and powerful, and his desire to serve others is central. He raises the bar and sets new marks for his profession.

Joseph Sansalone, in my retirement years, has opened the gateway to recovery, health and liveliness. I am grateful and thankful for his presence in my life and world.

9/10 Performance for Young Athletes

By Chris Harry / Catonsville, US

My family was introduced to Joe through a friend who had an excellent experience with Joe training her son. Joe had played an integral part helping him through some back issues. We met Joe with the idea of getting both of our sons in a structured conditioning environment.

At the 4 month point, we have seen significant changes in both of our sons with respect to agility, strength and overall core stability. Joe has spent a great deal of times with them teaching core fundamentals of head-to-toe conditioning.

One of the many activities my sons are doing is Kettle bell exercises. I could not be more impressed with the knowledge they have of what they are doing and why but, the overall gain in strength. They dig the "get up".

One of the unintended benefits that Joe has fostered through this training is bringing to brothers closer together in a different way. The support and drive they have for one another is pretty cool to watch as they train and it has carried over at home as well.

We are so pleased with the results thus far that my wife jumped in both feet with one of Joe's other team members and has found a new inner strength and love for training.

Continued Success to OPTI and Joe!

10/10 Life Altering

By Danyelle Berger / Baltimore, USA

I trained with Joe for two and half years beginning two weeks after the birth of my first child. I had been addicted to long distance running, and was eager to get back to that after my pregnancy. Instead, Joe said "just trust me" and changed my paradigm on "fitness" for life. I soon found myself doing things in the gym I never would have done before like lifting weights in the "guys" area (oh my!). I also found myself doing more than my share of whining and complaining but Joe didn't let me slack and didn't let me fail myself. He pushed me hard because he believed in me and I didn't. This may sound kind of hokey but the best trainers try to understand the motivation or lack thereof in their clients in order to uncover their true potential. Joe pushed me through my barriers (sometimes through tears too!) and I soon discovered strength in myself that I never knew existed both mentally and physically and gained a rocking body to boot! He changed my life in that first year of training and that is no exaggeration.

Joe also trained me throughout the duration of my second pregnancy and it was at this time he introduced me to Russian Kettlebells. I remember him giving me a 12kg to snatch and I thought he was insane yet just a few months later (after my baby was born) I was able to snatch a 24kg pretty solidly to my astonishment! I didn't believe I could do those things, but Joe did and that's what made all the difference I never would have tried on my own and he knew that about me. Joe went above and beyond to prepare me for my RKC certification which I completed in June 2009 just nine months after my son was born. Joe not only trained me, he educated me, and inspired me and there is absolutely no way I could have done it without him. But even more importantly, he showed me that I was capable of far more than I thought I was - to me, that has been priceless.

I have since built a successful Kettlebell program at my husband's martial arts school yet continue to refer people to Joe Sansalone and his business partners both in person and to their online You Tube resources. Without a shadow of a doubt, I know that any person that comes into contact with Joe as a client, a student, or a peer will receive education, instruction and mentoring far beyond what is expected. Joe loves what he does and it shows. He cares about his clients and his students and that shows. He is a special person and an amazing trainer and is constantly learning. I consider him my lifelong friend and mentor both in and out of the gym.

10/10 Joe will get you to your fitness goals safely!

By Don Berry / Frederick, USA

My name is Don Berry, DC, RKC, FMS I ahve been a practicing Martial Artist for 30 years and a Chiropractor for 22 years. Joe knows his stuff, he understands movement and has really helped me clear up my dysfunctional patterns that have developed over the years from martial arts training and various injuries. I have been Power lifting for the past 2 years with Marty Gallagher so I check in with Joe every few months to ensure that I continue to gain in mobility and my kettlebell structure is good.
As a recent CKFMS attendee I can say Joe owns the FMS. I have to think about it he doesn't it's the way he processes. He is amazing! Smart strong and very passionate about providing excellent service!
