Joe has been an invaluable resource for me as a coach and kettlebell instructor, resulting in my passing of the level q Kettebell Instructor Cert in February of 2014. I first tried Southbay Kettlebells in 2013 (w/ a Groupon). I was very intrigued by the whole concept, and tried it. I enjoyed the classes, but when the Groupon ended I went back to my local YMCA to work out alone. I then decided to try the UFC gym. UFC was good at first, but I started to work out more on my own. I saw some bells along the wall and started working out with them again. That is when realized that I enjoyed working out with bells. When another Groupon came around earlier this year, I jumped at the opportunity to go back to SBKB. I have been going for the last 8 months as often as I can. Everyone in class is very encouraging and we all push one another to reach the next level (some of us are training for Mud Runs and Spartan Dashes). I have enjoyed the workouts (and by enjoyed - I mean worked my butt off for the whole class in ways I never thought of) so much that I convinced my wife to try it. Now she is also an avid kettlebeller as well. The classes are small, and the instruction that you get from Joe is the best. He gives everyone close, personal attention. Joe is very focused on safety and proper technique. In addition to kettlebells, we use sandbags, TRX and battling ropes for training - just to mix it up. I have enjoyed the experience so much that I have asked Joe to train me for my RKC certification in March of 2015.

When I moved back to the South Bay I was looking for something that would take my fitness to the next level, so I was more than pleased to find Joe.
Iv'e tried every kind of exercise and have had many different trainers and hands down Joe has been the best. When I first met Joe I told him that I wanted to have strong defined triceps and in three months I had them. Joe's workouts are amazing and super challenging. He'll push you and make sure that you are always progressing yet he watches you like a hawk to make sure that your form is perfect. I have been a student of Joe's for about six months and my body has completely transformed. I'm a 49 female and my body looks better now then it did at 29!
So especially you Ladies, if you are willing to put in the hard work and be consistent Joe will see to it that you will get the body that you've always wanted.

I've been trainig with Joe for over a year, and what I appreciate the most about him is not only his knowledge and the technique, but that he completely focuses on one to get every single movement right. It gives me confidence to know that by doing the movements correctly I won't injure myself and am constantly gaining strength. The classes have been challenging and entertaining and after each one I feel very accomplished! Joe is a perfectionist so he doesn't let me off the hook easily but his way of correcting and instructing is very polite.
I also appreciate that even though the class is at 6:15 am he's always on time and has never failed to show up.

Great place for a workout. Not your usual dumbbells and barbells. This place is about battle ropes, sandbags, and of coarse kettlebells. Joe is a great/patient instructor and knows the kettlebell inside and out. Classes are small so everyone gets individual attention. Myself in particular needed help recovering from shoulder surgery, and I feel Kettlebell Southbay helped speed up the strength portion of my rehab. Kettlebells also helped relieve some lower back pain that had been bothering me.

I LOVE groupons because without them I would have never found Joe and Kettlebells of South Bay.

I have always wanted to do kettlebells I would say for the last 6 years or so, but never put the energy into looking for classes or doing any research. Them BAM saw it on groupon and gave it a whirl. I've taken 2 classes so far and I'm really excited that I bought the 12 class package!!

If you are interested or looking definitely give them a try!

Unbeatable! In my 40 years of being a professional athlete and foraying those skills into becoming a Professional Fitness Trainer myself I know that skills, habits and dedication is what I stand by. And so does Joe Chalakee. I have been training with kettlebells since 2008. As an equestrian, power lifter and fitness competitor my training experience in LA has been extensive. It is both difficult and rare to find experts of Joe's caliber anywhere in Los Angeles. I came to Joe to assist me in succeeding with my HKC certification. Joe's exceptional eye for the most minute of details, his innate ability to make every move so fluid and simple was an outstanding example of what he represents as a Dragon Door Instructor. I signed up not knowing much about this regimen but let me tell you, it's been great. The work out is fantastic! Works out all parts of your body and Joe is an outstanding trainer particularly in a method where form is critically important. I've been doing for a few months and I can really tell a difference in my core strength. I also like the facility. basic, with nothing to distract you. Joe, like others have mentioned, works with your level, is patient with everyone and yet still gets you through a challenging workout!

I love KettleBell South Bay! I started off as a complete newcomer after purchasing a Groupon and have been slowly learning the technique for the past few months. I have enjoyed it a lot more that I expected and appreciate the pace of each class. Every class seems different and yet the instructor builds on things you have learned or are continuing to master. 45 minutes is a great amount of time for a workout class, and there are many days and times on the schedule.

Joe is an excellent, patient instructor who really cares about teaching proper technique. He is a great combination of working at your level while pushing you to do your best. I really think you will enjoy the classes at whatever level you are joining.

I would highly recommend KettleBell South Bay as a great way to kick off your exercise resolutions for 2013.

The best health investment yet!

I found Joe from a Groupon for Kettlebells Southbay and have continued taking classes on a weekly basis. I have seen results by loss of inches and a dramatic increase in strength. Of all the group classes I have taken, kettlebells have produced the best results. I have done yoga, running, boxing, personal weight training sessions, group exercise classes, and currently hold a gym membership, however I enjoy, prefer, and look forward to working out at Kettlebells Southbay.

Safety, proper technique, and form are the foundation of Joe's classes. His expertise and experience are clearly evident in his teachings and demonstrations. The structure of the classes are based upon level of comfort and build upon each other. The class size is perfect and it feels like personal training sessions.

I could not ask for a better instructor!!!
I highly recommend Joe and Kettlebells Southbay. If I could give more stars, I would :-)

The instruction, dedication & commitment that Joe has to teaching students the "Proper Way" to swing the various kettle bells in addition to doing exercises properly is unprecedented in my over 30 years of exercise experience.

Since joining KSB I have noticed that I've lost inches in my legs - especially upper thighs and posterior section. The proof is definitely in the pudding - I'm back in my Size 6 leather jeans/skirts!! Some of my clothes are too baggy! An excuse to go shopping! Losing fat is the key here - especially for women who have two layers of fat. Running/tennis and other workouts have NOT given me these results!! Additionally I travel often for business & pleasure and my strength has improved as I'm able to lift my Travelpro (most times by myself) into the Overhead Cabin Compartment without having to beg anyone. :D

These classes are definitely not a "One Hit Wonder!" The techniques work over time & with dedication & hard work you too will realize the physical & mental benefits. The exercises at first are overwhelming - Turkish Get Up - notwithstanding - but again with patience anyone can master them & meet their individual fitness goals.

Awesome instructor + excellent instruction = Amazing results.

I have only been training with kettlebells for a couple of months but I have seen more results than I have with all my previous years of working out and I attribute it all to Joe. For those who really want to learn kettlebells and get fit, you have to learn from Joe. He really focuses on technique and form so as to minimize injury and maximize gains. Joe accommodates all levels of fitness and each workout is never the same.

The classes are small and the instruction from Joe really makes it feel like personal training. No workout is ever the same and can include anything from circuit training to using the TRX to sandbags and even battling rope. I really appreciate Joe's attention to detail, not only in doing kettlebells but also in how he runs his gym, providing followup calls and extra motivation.

Every workout is appropriately challenging and you will see amazing results in a short amount of time. Every class Joe kicks my butt and initially shatters my self-esteem but at the completion of each class, I emerge a new person, stronger and leaner. Thanks Joe!

I had heard about Russians kettlebells and had wanted to give them a try, so when I saw an offer on Groupon, I jumped at the chance. Joe Chalakee is an excellent instructor, with a wealth of knowledge about fitness and nutrition. He has a keen eye, and can quickly gauge your level of fitness and scale the workout so that you’re appropriately challenged. He makes sure you’re using proper form, so as not to get injured. Each session has a lot of variety; it’s fun, and never boring because he supplements the kettlebell training sessions with ropes and TRX. For those of you who are tired of - or intimidated by - the commercial, big box gyms, and you want to try something different, I definitely recommend classes with Joe at Kettlebells South Bay.

Southbay Kettlebell is a GREAT place to learn HOW to correctly use a kettlebell AND get the maximum benefit from the unique exercise it provides to the body. Kettlebells are unconventional as an exercise and I have found they work the body like nothing I have ever experienced. And, I am a genuine(over 25 years) fitness enthusiast, who has most likely done what ever thing you are thinking about to get in shape or take your fitness to the next level. I am a ultra runner (over 25 years), triathlete, and yoga girl, so I am in shape. Kettlebells Southbay is the only place where my pesky (middle age?) inner arm and inner thigh disappeared, within 6 weeks, going only 3 days a week. Joe, the owner and primary instructor is very precise at teaching the proper use and technique of Kettlebells. I appreciate the fact that he is no nonsense and not a "hand holder" type of trainer. The interesting thing I noted about the workouts is they may or may not make you sweat or "feel" like you have worked out, but the proof is in the significant strength, stamina, and physical body changes that occur in a short period of time, if you stay with the program. And, IMHO - less is more. Day on day off the best way to go, so the body can recover. Joe also does Ropes, which are so much fun, and sandbags, TRX, etc... Classes are beach laid back, and a great time. most importantly, Joe REALLY CARES about each of his students, and it is obvious from the moment you step into his facility.

I learned about Kettlebells South Bay when I purchased 12 Kettlebell sessions via Groupon. I had gotten bored with my current strength training routine and although I didn’t know what to expect or how to use Kettlebells, I was ready to try a different approach to strength training. Joe made me feel welcome from day one; he is a great and thorough instructor, patient and makes sure you use proper form so you don’t get hurt. Not only do we work out with Kettlebells, but Joe also incorporates circuits where we use battling ropes, sand bags and TRX moves and you definitely get an awesome workout. I have since joined Kettlebells South Bay and look forward to my workouts. Joe is fun to be around and pushes each individual based on their ability, if you can’t perform a certain move, he will modify it to fit your fitness level. I had the opportunity to work with Joe a few times over the past 1.5 years. First at the HKC in Newport Beach where he helped instruct, another time at a fitness conference where he was just attending like myself and more recently at his Kettlebells Southbay facility. Each time I have worked with Joe he was always pleasant, extremely helpful and understanding. He has a good "coaches eye" seeing the little things that might not always be obvious to the untrained instructor. I would (and will) return to Joe for further instruction and would recommend him to anyone else looking to learn about kettlebell movements.

I started with Joe about 8 weeks ago as cross training for surfing. I've noticed a definite improvement in my stamina, strength and overall fitness. What's great is that Joe incorporates not just kettlebells but battling ropes, ultimate sandbags and the Bulgarian bag! He is very intuitive and assesses where each student needs to be. But just ask him to step it up and you're in for a great workout.

I had been working out with kettlebells for awhile on dvd but didn't feel like I was getting enough form and techinique instruction. I learned about Kettlebells South Bay at a fitness expo so I decided to check them out. Joe did not disappoint. I was concerned that I was going to walk into a macho gym and be totally intimindated. Instead I was greeted by Joe with a friendly smile. He addressed all my questions and concerns. We spent most of my first class just building up to a two handed swing. That might not sound like a lot but I think by building a strong foundation based on good form has helped me pick up advanced moves more quickly. Not to mention keep me safe. We also train with sandbags and ropes so you never quite know what to expect when you walk in each day. Also, everyone I have met at Kettlebells South Bay is extremely friendly. It is a fun group of people to workout with. So if you are looking for an attentive trainer and workout that is a little different yet challenging I would suggest checking out Kettlebells South Bay.

i am a personal trainer and owner of Fit From The Ground Up. I met Joe, the owner of Kettlebell Southbay at a certification for battleropes held by the legendary John Brookfield.
During the class i thought to myself who's this guy he doesn't fit the standard bill of a trainer. I was amazed at how much stamina, strength, and power he had. He was always in the front of the class asking questions and volunteering to perform some of the exercises. That says alot about his character and the style and discipline of his training.
Fast forward about another 3 months and I met Joe again and talked to him about supplying my business with kettlebells. I didn't know about dragon door back then, but im really glad to have had Joe introduce me to hardstyle one on one.
During my first meeting with Joe he was very patient very understanding and knowledgable. He was an excellent teacher. even though i had alot of habits from other sports and weight training that kept me from being able to do a kettlebell swing correctly he was there every step of the way patiently. Hes an excellent teacher and very helpful. thanks joe. My clients hate me more because of you and i appreciate you for being a great teacher.

Joe is a fantastic trainer. I had been working out with kettle bells for four years and just found Kettlebells South Bay a few months ago while training to obtain the HKC. In less than 2 months he helped me perfect my form and pass the test with flying colors.

I appreciate his patience and most of all his style of instruction, he can very easily access what kind of "learner" each student is and change his message in a way that helps them better understand the point.

Small tweaks can make a world of difference and Joe is great at the incremental improvements that does not make people feel overwhelmed or inadequate like a lot of other trainers I've seen. I'm looking forward to training with Joe for the RKC.

By the way, I live in Orange County and drive an hour each way to train with him, given how much I hate driving and California freeways I would never do that if if didn't feel it was truly worth it. I definitely recommend Joe!

10/10 Finally Learnt to Do It Right

After a few years of working out with one of those DVDs out there, both my wife and I thought we should be getting more out of our workouts. Through an e-mail I decided to take a chance and attend Joe's workshop. Best investment ever!

By focusing on three core exercises and how to do them properly, Joe took us to a whole new level in a few hours! If we did not live so far away, I would galdy sign up permanently with him but I want to recommend and endorse him enthusiastically as one of the very best instructors one could want. I'll just give one example: by a few simple adjustments, we both more than DOUBLED the weight we had been using in our kettlebell workouts!

Definitely a five star experience. Hope to go back soon.

When I first went to join Joe's kettlebell class , I was very hesitant not knowing what to expect but with Joe's excellent teaching skills, patience (even with my cleans) and his positive encouragement...I am Hooked!!!!

Joe is very thorough and shows us every move in detail to make sure our form is correct so we don't get hurt. Joe's class has been the best workout I have tried because it gives me a total body workout with strength training along with it's cardiovascular benefits. It also helps that Joe is a fun and motivating Kettlebell instructor.

I have been training with Joe for almot 2 months and can notice a significant increase in my strength and overall conditioning. Joe is a patient and knowledgable teacher when introducing new techniques and correcting your form but also pushes you achieve new gains in each workout. This combines to make for an efficient and fun workout. Joe's instruction has gotten me hooked on kettlebells and the RKC method.

I found Joe through a link from Tim Ferriss' Four Hour Body. Originally I was just going to buy some Kettlebelles from him but when I went to pick them up he told me he does classes for all levels. I decided to take a class to get the basics and after the first class I was hooked. I think Joe is a great instructor and he really makes sure you get the basics and the right technique. I plan to have him help me get Certified in a few months.

I was looking to buy a real RKC kettlebell and found that Joe at South Bay Kettlebells was the only guy in the area that sold them. During my talk with him during the kettlebell pickup I decided to pick his brain concerning "Hard Style" KB exercises. I could tell that Joe had a comprehensive knowledge of all KB movements and I knew I have to attend his classes to learn proper technique that most of KB material lacks.

Joe's classes didn't disappoint. We have been working on the swing, clean, and goblet squat and not only have has my form improved but the aches and pains that I was previously experiencing doing KB moves incorrectly are gone!

I highly recommend Joe to anyone looking for proper kettlebell instruction.

Joe makes understanding movement easy. He is a technical instructor breaking down the moves in stages helping the student get the most out of each exercise. Joe's kettlebell classes are some of the best workouts I have ever done. His extensive experience with martial arts makes him a great instructor for beginners or advanced students and he caters to all experience levels and fitness levels so that everyone gets the most out of class.

Joe is a great instructor--very clear in his direction and he paces the class well. Everyone gets a killer workout, whether they are superfit or not that active. Even better, Joe knows martial arts, so those of us who supplement our MMA/BJJ training with kettlebells are getting techniques and exercises during kettlebells that will help our grappling, strikes, and kicks. I recommend him highly .

joe is awesome. his instruction is top notch and his attention to detail is amazing. he really emphasizes on technique to ensure the safety and progression of his students. he really takes the time to breakdown kettlebell techniques into all of its intricacies because the small things really do matter. joe is an awesome instructor and really cares for his students and the kettlebell community as a whole. kettlebells has not only improved my grip strength for bjj, it has also improved my cardio and overall health. lets just say i'll be doing kettlebell training with joe for a long time to come.

Joe Chalakee has been working with kettlebells for some time now and he has been offering solid instruction on the basics of this "new" method of strength training. (It may be new in the west but it has long since been popular in Russia where it was used to train athletes for decades) Today, more and more people are noticing the value of kettlebells as means of building lean muscle mass and burning fat. However, you can really only achieve these goals when you are properly trained and Joe is a solid personal trainer that knows how to boost your kettlebell routine to the top.

One of the major benefits to working with Joe is that he is explicitly knowledgeable in the details of the performance of the kettlebell swings. Far, far, far too many DVDs and books on the subject gloss over the details of the swings and lifts in order to add more new techniques into their running time/pages. This may aid in giving you a little extra bang for your reference material buck but it ultimately does not help you. Understanding the finer points of the swing will yield a two-fold effect:

First, it will maximize the benefits of the exercise since all the proper muscles are engaged in the manner they are supposed to be engaged. This greatly aids in boosting muscular development along with fat burning.

Secondly, understanding the proper mechanics of the swing will reduce injury. As with traditional free weight lifting, improper form puts the body in an awkward position. This is what leads to minor and potentially major injuries. Joe makes sure you know how to swing properly which cuts down on potential problems and issues associated with form errors.

Joe also knows that is takes to get someone properly motivated to perform at his or her best. These sessions are not listless workouts seeking to kill the proverbial clock. They are well organized and motivational. Those two factors alone will greatly aid in contributing to a successful fitness plan. So, the bottom line is you can't go wrong working with Joe.

I had no idea what to expect with kettlebells and being someone who is not very athletic I am happy to say Joe is a patient instructor who makes sure you get it right. Kettlebells are a great workout and Joe makes it fun too.

I have been working out with Joe at least once a week since the middle of July, Joe is a very good instructor who will take time to teach you the proper technique and explain why a certain excersise is done. Since i have been working out with Joe I have increased flexability and no longer have had back problems. anybody who works out with Joe will be pleased with workout and even more pleased with the type of instruction you receive.

I started taking Joe's kettlebell class about three months ago and was apprehensive at first but after the first lesson, I was hooked! Not only am I impressed with the results I am getting from the workout, I am equally impressed with Joe's interaction with his students. Joe's style of teaching is very unique to each individual. Joe understands that everyone is not at the same physical level and pushes you accordingly in a positive way to the best of your abilities. I really appreciate Joe's patience in helping his students achieve proper technique without making you feel inferior to the next person or inadequate. A friend of mine suggested I call Joe because she knew I was a huge kettlebell fan and wanted to have my daughters train with kettlebells to help them with their gymnastics. Joe understood the needs of our family immediately and came prepared to provide everyone with what they needed. He started out by assessing the technique and ability of each of us individually. From there, he provided very clear and effective training in the exercises that he felt were most appropriate for all of us. He was extremely knowledgeable about technique and safety concerns. His explanations were very clear and he really helped all of us to make corrections where they were needed. Joe really cares about his clients and it shows in every aspect of his teaching. After our session, every one of my daughter's commented on how great the training was and how much they enjoyed the session. We are all looking forward to meeting with him again!

I'll be fairly candid in my review - I was complete hesitate to hire Joe at the beginning only because of the lack of reviews. But after starting a dialog with him, it was clear Joe was a great listener. Listening is important for an instructor because it allows the instruction to be catered towards the client's (me and you) requirements and goals. I knew what my goals were and shared these with Joe. He understood completely and all of our training sessions were a reflection of this understanding.

Joe is very laid back - he doesn't scream in your face or make you feel incompetent for being unable to complete an exercise on the first attempt. Instead, he watches you do the movement (if it's unsafe, he'll tell you to stop immediately) and then provides great feedback. He'll then show you what you're doing wrong and how to correct it - this was great for me because I can look at a movement and understand it much better.

When I struggled with techniques, Joe was very understanding and worked with me until I got the moment correct. Joe showed me many KB movements throughout our training sessions that I now incorporate on a daily basis. I'm now going to the gym less each week and spend most of my workout time either in the park or the beach. That was probably one of my favorite parts of our training sessions - we were in the Park every time!

Joe is extremely professional, knowledgeable and flexible (he was able to meet every time request, even when I needed to change last minute due to my work schedule. If you thinking of KB, give Joe a call. You'll be happy you did.
