Randy Hauer: Biography

Credentials: RKC-TL, USAW Weightlifting and Sports Performance Coach

The RKC is a School of Strength with a potent curriculum and a demanding faculty, a faculty of which I am proud to be a part. The RKC's chosen tool is the Kettlebell; an implement which invites simplicity in both practice and programming. Although it is extremely versatile, I find that only a handful of the possible exercises are necessary at any one time to produce extraordinary results; results such as greater power, strength, endurance, core stability, mobility and resilience.

As far as I am concerned, everyone I train is an athlete in some form or fashion. So I make little practical distinction between the basic strength needs of the Soccer Mom and the Soccer Player. Both have their respective "sports specific skill sets" and it is these skill sets which are paramount: the strength and conditioning work should always support and enhance the Soccer Mom skill set and the Soccer Player skill set. Everyone is busy and it is often the case that weight training, if too demanding on time and energy, is the first casualty when pruning the daily schedule. Over my 8 years of kettlebell training I've learned that unless an individual is really going for top percentile strength levels, the kettlebell can provide high levels of cardio-respiratory fitness, functional strength and improved body composition in as little as a 1/2 hour to 45 minutes of focused work three days a week.

My approach is not cookie cutter/one size fits all. It is very individualized, flexible and tailored to the ability and experience of each athlete I train. Workouts with me are not intimidating and are only as difficult as required to produce the desired results. My training philosophy holds that one should be able to repeat a workout if required and one should feel better and more energized after a workout than before. My promise as a coach and trainer is that all my athletes, regardless of previous training experience, will gain new levels of strength, power, durability and confidence.

Excellent Teacher and Motivator Rated 10 out of 10
I attended the June 2008 RKC and man what an experience. I had the privilege of having Randy as my team leader and head instructor of our group. Eventhough I am still learning how to move he showed me how to move more efficiently through my KB swing and snatch. Without Randy or his team of instructors I don't think I would have made it through the weekend. Along with all of the bandaging of my hands he motivitated me through the weekend and helped me to become a better instructor to my client's.

Thanks Randy!

An Exemplary Leader! Rated 10 out of 10
I had the privilege of being assigned to Randy's team at the June 2008 RKC. As an RKC Team Leader, he set a very high standard, as he demonstrated all of the highest attributes associated with this immense responsibility.

Randy leads by example and is extremely knowledgeable in both the physical and often underestimated mental demands of the RKC system. Using this depth of knowledge and his ability to demonstrate and articulate it clearly, he applied it to me specifically and as result, was invaluable in getting me through the three day ordeal and obtaining my RKC.

Future RKC candidates should consider themselves extremely fortunate if placed on a team that Randy leads.

Leadership by Example Rated 10 out of 10
I just returned from the June 2008 RKC, where I was an assistant instructor and Randy was my Team Leader. I was impressed with how well Randy conducted his team while still remaining relaxed and approachable. His team's performance increased dramatically throughout the weekend, thanks to the excellent RKC system and Randy's skillful coaching. The RKC is an intense weekend and Randy kept his team motivated, learning, and performing until the very end. He is strong and authoritative without showboating -- an excellent trainer and a pleasure to work with.

Hour Well Spent Rated 10 out of 10
I went to Randy to clean up my technique on several kb lifts and in the hour I worked with him, I was able to learn the finer points of several of the basics (swing, snatch, clean and press) that will allow me to lift heavier and more importantly keep me uninjured. Randy's knowledge is top notch and his ability to convey it in a manner that is easy to understand is outstanding. I highly recommend Randy to anyone in the Delaware Valley.

Excellent Instruction Rated 10 out of 10
We recently invited Randy to hold a Kettlebell workshop at our Springfield, PA facility. Randy taught for a little over 3 hours, and showed us the basic swing, getup and snatch. The instruction was clear and concise, and Randy made sure everyone understood the concepts before moving on. He paid particular attention to body positioning and breathing, which are things that an average teacher might gloss over.

This is the second time we've worked with Randy (Olympic lifting at CrossFit Philly) and we'll surely invite him back for more!

Incredible results Rated 10 out of 10
When I first met Randy eight months ago, I had never heard of kettlebells. I had been recovering from an old rotator cuff injury, which left me with a limited range of motion and stength in my right shoulder. With Randy's knowledge of kettlebells and his skill as an accomplished fitness instructor. I have been able to gain an incredible amount of motion and strength. For example when I started using kettlebells I could not snatch a 4kg bell for one rep! By the end of November I set a PR with two sets of ten snatches with a 24kg bell!! This is in addition to an increase in core strength and flexibility. I can only imagine what the future holds for me with the Randy's help and supervision.

Great Group Class- Feb 9th Rated 10 out of 10
This was my first class using the Kettlebells...Had a slight back injury and was tentative about taking a weight lifting class...I was very impressed with Randy taking the time to go over some breathing and stretching exercises necessary for proper Kettlebell techniques..Enjoyed the extra effort he spent with each individual to correct their form or just answer some questions... Just ordered two single kettlebells and waiting for delivery...

My back felt great the next day, did feel it in my legs. Can't wait to get started... I know I have a lot to learn...

Now I get it! Rated 10 out of 10
I have been using kettlebells for about 6 months, but after one session with Randy I realize I have been doing a lot of things wrong. I learned things about the swing I didn't know I didn't know.

I really enjoyed the class. His style of teaching was excellent. Randy is very thorough and will review every angle of every move to make sure you have it dialed in. Now I have the full confidence in my ability to explain proper form on swings and get-ups to whomever I train. I will definitely train with him again soon!

escellent demonstration and visuals, now i get it Rated 10 out of 10
i have been doing PttP cycles for about five months, and have been interested in kettlebells as a conditioning tool to complement my strength program, so i jumped at the chance to attend randy's class at delaware valley cross-fit on february 8.

randy spent a lot of time on posture and breathing and tension before we even picked up a KB, then we spent most of the class on swings, which is what i wanted most to learn. next was the turkish get-up, followed by snatches. he has a gift for getting his students to visualize proper technique, and his class was well-structured and efficiently timed. randy also made himself available for side chat during breaks and after class.

i am confident that i can safely and correctly perform all three exercises, thanks to randy's patient, thorough and effective demonstration techniques, so much so that i have now ordered a 16-kg kettlebell and can't wait to start incorporating KB exersizes into my PttP routine.

i hope i will have the opportunity to attend future KB classes if randy offers more in the area.

Yoda is in PA Rated 10 out of 10
When I first started working with Kettlebells I learned from DVDs. I then took a group beginner class to learn more and try and clean up my form. My training really took off after I met with Randy on a one on one level and he polished up my technique.

When I decided to become an RKC Randy helped me every step of the way. Three and a half months away from my RKC I was only able to snatch the 24kg 20x each arm and I needed a total of 74 for my weight. With Randy's help I was able to go from 20 reps to 63L 61R in 2 1/2 months. By the time my RKC cert came around I felt I could have done the snatch test with one arm. It was nice to go to the RKC feeling fully confident that I did the home work needed to get me through.

I could not say enough good things about Randy as a Coach. He has a great teaching manner and really knows his stuff. I often E-mail him for his advice and training tips and he is always more than helpfull.

Focus on the Finer Points Rated 10 out of 10
I have been doing KB swings for several months now but my technique was purely defined by ignorance. Randy brought into focus more of the finer points of the swings. Learning the proper breathing alone was a huge difference.
Randy has very good techniques for allowing his students to visualize and comprehend the proper form and muscle sets that should be used for the KB.

Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Rated 10 out of 10
Randy knows his stuff and I love the way he takes the time to insure that the padawan/novice understands the rationale behind the movements and the impact the movement has upon the entire physical fitness picture.

Since I've known Randy, I have learned more about strength sports training in the past three months than I have in the 20 years I've been involved in strength sports. I wish there was somehow I could turn back the clock, but I can't. But with Randy's guidance, I'm going to give the down hill slide one heckuva good fight.

All the best,

More than just kettlebells Rated 10 out of 10
I am a runner and started losing muscle and was getting burnt out with my routines. I needed a new routine that would help with my endurance and keep muscle. But still leave me with energy to run when I needed too. So I started training with kettlebells a couple of years ago. I love it and can't get enough. I approached Randy at the gym one day to see his point of perspective through training with kettlebells. Every training sessions I had with Randy he worked right along side me. He was patient and made sure my form was right and answered all my questions eventhough our hour was over. He has individualized all my routines to fit the needs for my training gains. He is more than just a kettlebell instructor, he is a patient motivating friend.

Randy is Awesome Rated 10 out of 10
I totally agree with the previous reviews. Randy has been coaching me in the Olympic Lifts. His depth of knowledge and ability to take complex lifts and break them down into manageable segments and piece them back together is nothing short of amazing. His keen eye and coaching cues have really helped me progress a great deal in the short amount of time I have been working with him.
Although, I now feel confident practicing the Olympic Lifts on my own, it's always great when Randy is there to help me tweak my technique to make the weight fly overhead almost effortlessly.
As if all that was not enough, Randy is also the local kettlebell guru. Have a question about kettlebells or their applications? Ask Randy. I'm also going to be incorporating some of his "Fat Incinerator Workouts" into the mix. The transformation Randy made with these workouts is pretty extreme.

Very Good Motivator Rated 10 out of 10
Randy is very good and very patient coach. He took a lot extra time to cover all of the basic kettlebell movements and how subtle changes make a big difference.
I was the most impressed in the way that he took my conditioning goals and ramped them up past what I had previously thought possible. I was very happy to find a coach that really cared about my performances and goals.
I always look forward to his gut busting workouts.

I came to Randy Hauer with a problem, and he helped me fix it. You see, I am also a kettlebell enthusiast, and the issue I was unfamiliar with was weightlifting. Cleans and jerks and snatches with barbells and kilos and singlets and all that good stuff. Coach Hauer provided me with the necessary gear and training to begin my quest to learn these movements. He took the science we were both familiar with and he translated it into the language of barbells and bumper plates. He has more experience in this field than I do with life. And while we have spoken to each other about kettlebells, I am content to sit back and listen to him flow about strength and health, and the evolution of what we do. What we all do: Train hard.

Kettlebells, barbells, Kettlebell Sport, Olympic Weightlifting, Coach Hauer has seen it all. And he has retained the best of it and scrapped what does not work. He may look all handsome and smart, but deep down he is NOT a nice guy. He will make you work. Hard. And then some.

Great Knowledge and Patience Rated 10 out of 10
Prior to purchasing my bells I scheduled a session with Randy to see if kettlebell training was for me. He immediately impressed me with his knowledge of strength training in general, and kettlebell training specifically. He is not a yeller and screamer, in your face kind of guy. He doesn't need to be. His knowledge is awesome and his ability to translate complicated theory into practical terms for the lay man or lay women are wonderful. I bought the bells and will be scheduling a tune-up session when I am ready to progress from the ETK Minimum to the ROP. I recommend a session with Randy to anyone that is considering training with kettlebells.....or who wants a killer workout that they will be too sore to forget.

The Quiet Professional! Rated 10 out of 10
Randy was my team leader for June 08 RKC and it was a pleasure meeting him. He is the quiet professional....never loud or showboating. He is patient, extremely knowledgeable and helps his team master all necessary skills to become RKC's.
Thanks Randy for all your help. It was a great weekend and I look forward to coming back for Level II.

Tremendous Overview/Details Rated 10 out of 10
Randy is extremely involved with his craft. He helped fine tune the 6 basics and gave me a couple of golden nuggets of information. He has a plethora of knowledge on movement skills. Very patient and a great teacher. Bottom line: don't hesitate to work with Randy.

Great Knowledge Rated 10 out of 10
Randy and I met in a small park outside Philadelphia one hot afternoon, and, boy, he sure sure put me through my paces. It was great.

Because his knowledge of anatomy and how parts work together was phenomenal, his emphasis on proper technique made all the sense in the world. I became stronger that very afternoon by employing his suggestions.

Randy was quick to see my level of fitness and go right to where I needed the most help. I only hope that I can remember half of what he taught me.

I must have remembered something, because my training has gone towards the roof since we met.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Thanks, Randy

Awesome Olympic Weightlifting Clinic Rated 10 out of 10
When I signed up for Randy's weightlifting clinic I figured that the clinic would reinforce some basic concepts and that's about it. Well, it did that and more. First, it was good to know that there were a few things that I was actually doing okay. Second, Randy and his co-instructor made little tweaks and gave me tips that made a huge difference. Tips such as "always use the hook grip when lifting." "But what if the weight is light," I asked. Rather than throw a bumper plate at my head, Randy patiently explained why this was important as a way to get your arms in the optimal position. I was amazed at what a difference these little things made. Three hours later, my muscles were sore, my thumbs were raw from all that hook gripping, but I was very happy, I had learned a lot, and had a lot of fun.

If you live in the Denver metro area and want to improve your Olympic lifting technique, I highly recommend Randy.

Excellent instructor - the best Rated 10 out of 10
I recommend Randy without reservation. Besides being a lot of fun, Randy was extremely knowledgeable, intelligent, patient, and was able to explain complex movements in simple and easily understood terms. He has a keen eye that quickly identified problems with my technique - however subtle. If you are interested in kettlebell training in Colorado, I cannot think of a better instructor than Randy.
Jim McManus - Boulder, CO

An expert eye! Rated 10 out of 10
I was visiting Boulder for a few days and was luckily able to fit in four sessions with Randy while I was there. I sought him out because I wanted an expert eye to check out my kettlebell form. I'm an RKC myself and have watched and read almost everything out there, but Randy had technique suggestions and corrections that I hadn't heard before. He made little corrections in my movement that in turn have made a big improvement in my form.
Randy was very easy to work with-a real pro! I look forward to working with Randy again sometime.
