Derek Toshner: Biography
Hi,
Thanks for stopping by my RKC page.
My gym is called TNT Fitness Results, and is located in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on Rickmeyer Drive just across the street from Menards. I run classes and personal training sessions for a variety of individuals including:
1. Those starting an exercise program to lose weight
2. Those looking to break a fitness or weight loss plateau
3. Fire fighters, police officers, and other professionals who need conditioning
4. Under developed athletes
5. Highly conditioned athletes
My background is in strength and conditioning, and I competed for many years at a very high level of track and field. Today I workout to keep my body in tune for an active lifestyle involving rock climbing, as well as to lead by example to those looking to improve their fitness level. My philosophy is if I preach it, I must be it. I expect my clients to improve, but demand improvement from myself in areas of spirit, mind, and body.

Indomitable Spirit
Rated 10 out of 10
My 5 year old son is an orange belt in Ty Kwon Do. I use one of his terms to describe my experience at TNT Fitness. According to my son, Indomitable Spirit means "The fire inside you that makes you good." I started at TNT at the end of July 2009. I am a relative "Newby" at Kettlebells, yet feel compelled to write this review for Derek.
Today was my daughter's first day at gymnastics, she is 17 months old. After a half hour of chasing my cutie pie around the gym, I loaded my kids in the car and took my son to Flag Football. I previously mentioned my son also takes Ty Kwon do (3 days a week). As a busy mom, I hardly have time to think about myself. In my earlier life, before kids and a husband, I was passionate about gymnastics and dance. I was captain of my dance teams in both high school and college. In college we took a 1st two years in a row at the Midwest Continent Conference for small schools. After college I taught dance to grade school kids. At the age of 25 while identifying migratory birds in Door County for my Master's Thesis for a degree in Environmental Science (emphasis in Biology) I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. I now have no thyroid and issues maintaining blood calcium. I became afraid to push myself too far physically. I gave up a lot of physical activities, including dance.
I came to TNT to "Get fit." But what I found was more than that. Derek has magically transformed his students into TNT Kettlebell addicts. Yes, newbie that I am, I am an addict too! I am addicted to the new found strength and stamina my body has. I am addicted to the praise friends, family and even relative strangers give me on my appearance. I am becoming an addict at eating healthier. Most of all, I am addicted to the indomitable spirit that Derek has shared with each of his students. I feel good. It is good to be around others with this spirit.
Thank you Derek!!!

Great way to improve your life in a simple way!

Derek Toshner is a great instructor. I have been training with him for about 3 months now and I see my bodyfat go down and muscle build up. I work out twice a week and every time Derek comes up with new excersises. It stays interesting that way and you never know what you will be up for that training session. Derek not just teaches Kettle Bell but also lets you know how to improve your whole life style. What to eat and not to eat etc. Kettle Bell is a great way to excersise and easy to do at home as well. As soon as you think it is getting to easy; you just get a heavier Bell.. It's never easy and that is why I am doing it!!

Real Strength Inspiration!
Rated 10 out of 10
Since Derek has introduced me to kettlebells, my body has undergone a substantial change. There is definition where I didn't think was possible and my true strength has shot through the roof. Being an avid triathlete and personal trainer, I thought I was in decent shape. However, Derek has pushed me above and beyond my limits as well as inspired me to register for the RKC in April. Kettlebells will forever be a staple of my workouts. Thanks Derek!

Decrease fat while building functional strength through kettlebells
Rated 9 out of 10
A real motivator with a deep concern for his students Derek leads by example. My results so far to date with kettlebell training along and Derek's healthy eating suggestions have inspired me to add a THIRD day to my workout schedule. I have lost over 25lbs and more importantly, I continue to improve my overall functional strength.
Derek's workout are anything but, routine. Each workout is either geared toward strength or cardiovascular, alternating each day from upper body to lower body routines which keeps the body guessing what muscle group is going to hurt next. It's not easy but, nothing worhtwile ever is. The best part is as you continue the program the pain is much more bearable and the results keep you coming back for more. It also helps to have a great group of people to workout with. Derek has a way to bring out your best no matter what your level of fitness may be. I strongly encourage anyone to check it out.

Awesome Motivator!

Derek is an awesome trainer! I enjoy running marathons, but I about a year ago I had an injury that made it painful for me to run. I gained weight and my running times slowed drastically. In August I started working with Derek, thorough he's expert knowledge in the use of Kettle Bells and he's ability to motivate, I'm back on the road again, feeling stronger and healthier then ever!

He Truly Leads by Example!!
Rated 10 out of 10
I have been working with Derek as my personal trainer for almost a year now, and the results have been fantastic! With powerful motivation and truly inspired workouts, I have been able to lose 10lbs overall and even more importantly, I have been able to maintain normal blood sugar readings! I am a type-two diabetic and weight-loss is VERY difficult, but by adjusting my medication and continuing my 5-day-a-week excercise (two days are Kettlebell workouts), I am able to feel GREAT, tightly control blood sugar readings, and even lose some weight, while having fun, gaining muscle and functional strength! Derek is easily the most "FIT" person I know, and I wouldn't be able to follow his regimen and believe so strongly in it, if he wasn't. What a great example.

Turn Back The Clock!
Rated 10 out of 10
I have been training with Derek for 9 months now. He told a group of us at a business meeting that he was starting a high intensity type of training that focused on useable strength. He also said that it wasn't an easy workout but it produced amazing results for those that could do it.
Accepting that challenge was the best decision I have ever made for my health.
I workout 3 times a week and each workout is a different combination of exercises, which is a refreshing change from typical weightlifting. Derek is a hands on trainer that works out with us and insists on proper technique for maximum effect. The results from Kettlebell training and Dereks counsel on diet and suppliments have resulted in increased strength, endurance, flexibility and general well-being. I'm now wearing the same size clothes that I wore when I was in my late 20's, which is very rewarding now that I'm 52!

Better Than Body Building
Rated 10 out of 10
I've always looked for a challenge. I studied Karate when I was 18, taught aerobics at 25, then I was a body builder at age 35 - competing and taking three awards.
I went from a physical job to one that was more sedate, so at age 46 I decided it was time to get back into shape again.
I tried Zumba, aerobics and weight lifting again. My heart wasn't in it and I couldn't get excited about doing any of them.
Then I discovered Derek and Kettle Bell training. I love it - I've never met an instructor that is so versitile in his work outs! There have never been two alike. I also really like the way my body feels - I feel strong and in control. Derek is always there to support all of us! He sincerely cares about how we progress. Derek not only helps us with our work outs, but diet as well. He is the best!

You never know what to expect at your next workout class...

No two workouts are the same; this is what is so great about it. Also being in a motivated group with Derek as a very motivated instructor helps a lot. Derek keeps his classes 'fresh' and he knows how to keep you interested. It is hard and fun at the same time; you see results and that is what matters!!

The last piece of the puzzle.
Rated 10 out of 10
My son Henry Guell was Derek's first customer at his Fond du Lac location. Henry started working out in December 2008. Henry is a high school shot and discus athlete at Saint Mary's Springs High School. He is also a 3 time state qualifier in these events. He has always been an avid weighlifter at school to stay strong but he really didn't have functional strength until he started working with Derek. He started with a 20 kilo kettle bell in December. Last week he did a Turkish Getup with 105# on the 7 foot olympic barbell. And his track performance has been excellent so far this season. He has competed in 3 meets so far this season and has set new personal records in each of them. I like to call his kettle bell workouts the final piece of the puzzle that will earn him his goals at the state track championships this season. Derek has not only been a great motivator and instructor, but he has been a mentor and friend as well. We feel so fortunate to have Derek come into Henry's life at this time. The combination of Derek's track background and his expertise at teaching the kettlebell has been great for us.
Jim Guell - Eden, WI
Thusday April 23 at Appleton Xavier High School, Henry broke our schools 33 year old discus record. He currently has the second farthest throw in the state at 165 feet 6 inches. Adding kettle bell training has been the only thing that has changed in his workout routine in the last four years. He currently is undefeated in the shot and discus in 5 meets this season. Derek also has a master plan for Henry to time his workouts to end at a specific date prior to the state track championships to ensure maximum training effectiveness.

Intangible Aspect of Kettlebell Training
Rated 10 out of 10
If I had to use one word to give a testimony to Derek, the word "Servant" would fit. Derek serves the people he instructs with humility. Never once have I witnessed Derek elevate himself above the people in his class of instruction. He uses his physical, mental, and natural ability with humility in mind.
His classes are always fresh because of his care in preparation. The respect that I have seen from other clients towards Derek is a direct result of his care, diligence, and love for what he is doing. Derek uses affirmation during workout sessions by calling out what a person is doing correct, and he is a tentative listener. He stays to answer any questions people have until the last person leaves the building. He does a great job in being enthusiastic and drawing the BEST out of his clients.
A great leader is open for improvement, and Derek is constantly improving himself, and stresses the correct techniques to meet the kettlebell training standards. Most importantly, Derek puts his family first by speaking highly of his wife and daughter in class.
I have pushed myself further than I thought possible because of the respect I've gained for Derek's intangible attributes he implements in kettlebell classes.

Nothing but Compliments
Rated 10 out of 10
I have been working out at Derek's studio for the past six months, and I have nothing but compliments for him. It is obvious from the first session that Derek is one of the fittest trainers in the area: he lives the lifestyle that he promotes, he models by setting and reaching fitness goals for himself, and he is up to date on the newest training techniques.
Those who don't know Derek might see his achievements and fitness level to be intimidating, but he is anything but. He is truly dedicated to helping people see results. He tunes in to each member's personality, finding the right words for each individual to ensure they don't check out early. He is constructive and optimistic, his workouts are carefully planned, and he is able to clearly relate the theory behind each exercise.
I have joined countless "regular" gyms in the past, quitting after a few months of being ignored or not seeing results. Derek's training style doesn't even let the thought of quitting cross your mind. His expertise and character make one a kettlebell addict.

If your looking for one of the most dedicated and down to earth trainers in wisconsin, then Derek Toshner is by FAR the best choice. He is not only the nicest person i've ever met but he is the kind of person that when a client of his misses a day he's on the phone helping you every step of the way! He's definitely there for you when you think that you can't go anymore! With Derek as my trainer i've lost about 30 pounds and increased my health a million times!!! All i can say is that if your looking for one of the best trainers and workouts you've ever put yourself through then Derek is the man you need!!!

final piece of the puzzle, mission accomplished!
Rated 10 out of 10
My son's shot and discus season ended in the winning of 2 gold medals at the Wisconsin State Track and Field Championships at UW La Crosse June 5&6. He had a personal record of 175' 5" in the discus for the season. A 31 foot increase from last years p.r. He also had a p.r. of 54'5 1/2" in the shot put. A 5 foot increase from last years p.r. These are stunning increases in distance that I can only attribute to his 6 months of training with Derek. Not only did Derek end Henry's training precisely at the right number of days prior to the meet in order for him to be fully recovered but he also traveled to La Crosse to coach him at the meet. The climax of his effort being on Saturday during the shot put event. Saturday was cold and it was pouring rain during the entire event. Derek called me on Friday night at our hotel and proposed the idea of putting Henry through a special mini kettle bell workout right before he threw, in order to get his muscles firing and have him primed for the shot competition. I can only say that it worked perfectly. Henry was primed for the event while the other throwers were tight and stiff. Derek also suggested that Henry go across the street and keep warm inside the campus building and stay loose in there rather than wearing himself out by throwing endless practice throws like all but one of the other throwers did out in the cold and wet. To sum it up Henry would not be a double state champion without the expertise of Derek Toshner. To have an instuctor of such talent in our town is truly a blessing. No other trainer would travel 3 1/2 hours to help his athlete compete. Let alone carry a 24 kilogram kettle bell through the stadium for Henry to use. With his 2 year old daughter in the other arm. Athletes, kettle bell works! And if you are lucky enough to be trained by Derek, you will achieve your goal. My son has the gold medals to prove it.

TNT = TRUE PHYSICAL FITNESS
Rated 10 out of 10
I began at TNT in February 2009. I was a sporadic exerciser, at best, until I found TNT. I was pretty bored with the traditional running and elliptical machines and knew I had to mix it up to stay interested. I was an Division I athlete in college at UW Madison as a rower in the top women's varsity 8 boat--and very competitive back then--but that was 15 years ago. I had found nothing to date that kept my interest like rowing did in college, until I met Derek Toshner and my new friend, the kettlebell.
Kettlebells have become something I completely believe in. The motion of the swing is very familiar to me as a former rower (except you're standing instead of sitting). The momentum, range of motion, and strength required all mean that you are maximizing your time in a very efficient workout that means fast, noticeable results. I have lost over 10# since starting with kettlebells and gained a great deal of endurance and strength. My overall body fat has decreased and I have lost 2 pant sizes. The other day I swung a 16 kg kettlebell 100x and I'm a 37 year old woman. I can't even believe it.
But I give credit where credit is due. I show up, but Derek keeps the classes interesting. I have never done the same workout twice. Some weeks I attend 5x/week, and he still manages to mix it up. When I was frustrated with my weight, Derek offered sound advice that I took and used, and it worked. I dropped the weight easily. He will call you if he hasn't seen you in a while. He is always motivational and positive. I have yet to see him have a bad day.
My hope is that more and more people discover the benefit of TNT Fitness Results and kettlebells to become as fit as they can be and change their body composition and their health. I know if they just come to Essentials Class and once or twice again, they will see clearly the potential kettlebells has to change their life and their health and overall fitness for the better.

33lbs and counting!
Rated 9 out of 10
Coming up to the 1 year anniversary of TNT Fitness Results and to date I have lost 33lbs and thoroughly enjoy classes. . . . ok, I enjoy the results of improved health and fitness. Derek works to keep modifying routines and adapts the class to the particular needs and goals of his students. I rate Derek a 9 out of 10 because nobody is perfect but, he is awfully close. My goal has changed from weight loss to health maintainance and body fat reduction.
Thanks Derek!

My experience with Derek has been unlike anything I could imagine. Ever since i started training with Derek, he has continued to push me and help me acheive my goals as an athlete, as well as pass on to me life lessons and advice on how to succeed. Whenever I wanted to quit, even if i would never say it, Derek would constantly remind me and the other members of the gym to keep going. He not only leads with words, but most importantly, by example. He has goals that he sets for himself, and he doesnt stop until he acheives them. As a member of the gym and an admirer of his, this characteristic is inspiring and drives me to keep being the best I can be, as an athlete and a person. Thanks Derek!

Leading By Example
Rated 10 out of 10
Training with Derek has been an experience unlike anything I can imagine. I never had much of a work ethic. I would go into the weight room at school and fool around just as much as i lifted... sometimes more. But when I came to train with Derek, I saw how fit he was and how he went about doing things. He never does anything half way, its all or nothing. That type of attitude inspired me. I started working harder, trying to emulate Derek, which is probably the most exhasuting thing I've ever done! But not only has he tought and showed me to be a better athlete, he has also showed me how to be a great person. Derek is the most genuine person you'll ever meet and he is a true friend who is as commited to the people he meets as he is to the Kettle Bells he makes them lift :) thanks Derek!

Attention Recreational Athletes!
Rated 10 out of 10
I consider myself a recreational athlete... and kettlebell training with Derek has improved my performance significantly and made these activities much more enjoyable. I've been training at TNT Fitness Results for about 9 months now and couldn't be more satisfied with the time, money, and effort spent.
I first came to the gym mostly just to see the place and see what it was all about. I knew Derek as a friend who played on my softball team and knew how dedicated an athlete/fitness nut he was. I didn't have any real intentions to join since I figured that I was "too busy" to workout on a regular, structured basis. Boy was I wrong, and was sold after the first Beginners (or Essentials) class. The first few weeks were, honestly, hellish as I was getting started with 2-3 classes a week. Quickly though, I was in much better shape and able to recover quickly enough that I was doing 5-6 sessions a week. I'm a big fan of the 1/4hr lunch session, as well, as they break up my desk jockey job quite well.
I was able to cut-off about 10lbs, move my batting average from bottom of the team to the top, increase my throw strength, get-up on a slalom waterski my very first try, and increase my daily energy all as a direct result of working with Derek.
Derek's TNT kettlebell workouts are fun, incredibly efficient, and so very effective. It is far easier to stay dedicated to a couple of regular scheduled workouts a week that push you to your limits and show definite results than it is to get up the motivation to go to a traditional gym and spend more time with less results.

OVER THE TOP
Rated 10 out of 10
I have been working out most of my adult life and thought I was in pretty good shape-- until I picked up a kettlebell!! Training in the functional movements and intense core work at TNT with Derek has made me far stronger and agile than I have ever been. His ability to modivate the class and be able to watch everyone in the class for proper technique is amazing. I get far more out of a workout with Derek pushing me than I ever could working out on my own. Just wish I knew about this in my 20's!

GO BEYOND YOUR GOALS WITH TNT
Rated 10 out of 10
I joined TNT in January 2009. First I was skeptical about joining TNT because of the monthly cost and in the past I joined 24 hour exercise clubs and even paid for a personal trainer and I never got the results that I was seeking or the encouragement to keep up the program or to go beyond my comfort zone. Some other concerns I had was could I do Kettlebells with the physical problems that I have which are: I had a disc taken out of my lower back, had my shoulder dislocated at work and I have arthritis in both my knees. So I sat down with Derek on a 1-on-1 session and we discussed my concerns and physical problems and after that meeting I decided to give it a try. Well it is now September and I am up to coming 4 times a week! Plus I have lost 28lbs. and a total of 23 1/4" off my body!! I am more fit at the age of 44 than I was when I was in my 20's!
My main goals when I first started was to lose weight, build total body strength and increase my endurance. With my profession being a Correctional Officer, I wanted to be able to go to work and feel I could protect myself and others if the need ever arises. I can honestly say that I have reached my goals and feel now that I will exceed them!
Derek is an all around outstanding person. He doesn't just teach the class, he encourages everyone to go above and beyond their own comfort zone and to do things they never thought that they could. If you have any concerns or questions, Derek is there for you. With me having all the aches and pains with my body, Derek was always right there to help me work through them. If there was something in the routine that I could not physically do Derek would show me a different way to do it. I now can do some of those things in the routine that I could not do in the past and my aches and pains have decreased quite a bit.
Derek is also very adamant that exercise alone is not enough to improve ones health, but consuming the correct foods is highly important. He is not one that just preaches what he teaches, but he lives the lifestyle which encourages you to do the same. I can honestly say that this is the healthiest I have been in my life. Derek had me do a PHJ, Pie-Hole Journal, and I did it for a full month. Derek looked over my PHJ and pointed out how I can improve some things and complimented me on some others. It has been quite an eye opener and just changing a few things in my diet has actually improved my health. Doing a PHJ is also important for someone because it makes you think twice before putting something in your Pie-Hole(mouth).
I want to challenge anyone who reads this that if they want to become all around healthier to come and try out TNT and to become all they can be or become someone they wish they could be! I am telling you that Derek is the trainer for you!

The Fountain of Youth
Rated 10 out of 10
After turning forty, I had finally found the ambition to exercise. Unfortunately, my joints didn't want anything to do with it. Whatever I seemed to try, weight lifting, running, aerobics, etc. after an initial period of improvement, I inevitably would hurt one or more of my joints. Working out soon became limited by how much pain I could tolerate and not by my strength or endurance. No matter how much I wanted to, I could not work out hard enough to stay fit. For the first time in my life my stomach looked like cottage cheese. My strength and abilities were actually deteriorating. How bad was I going to feel when I turn fifty. All I could think about was what I can't do anymore. How depressing. Lucky for me my story doesn't end this way.
My first day at TNT Fitness was definitely a new experience. Instead of being pointed at some impersonal machines and saying have fun, I walked into an open room and there was Derek Toshner and some funny lumps of metal. He immediately started explaining the benefits of Kettle Bell training, his passion to help people become fit, and about setting and accomplishing your goals. Pretty cool so far. Then came the work out. I was a little embarrassed at first swinging a metal ball around like a grumpy old lady and her hand bag and then doing a Turkey Get Me Up thing a ma bobs. But after only a half an hour, all the little muscles that have been napping for the last fifteen years were screaming were alive! I then participated in Derek's attempt to accomplish one of his goals of beating a national snatch record. Finally, I tagged along on a What's Healthy To Eat At The Grocery Store Field Trip. Quite an impressive introduction to TNT Fitness.
The following week I jumped right into a regular a regular work out schedule. Derek kept me motivated and always new when to push me harder. Instead of stopping and going home when I felt tired, I stopped when we reached our goals. After about two months I was looking and feeling pretty darn good. I was making it through all the work outs, my muscle tone looked good, and I didn't need two days and some ibuprofen to recover from every work out. It wasn't easy and I am certainly not twenty anymore, but I am using the body I have to the best of its ability. This would be a good ending, but it gets even better.
Since I was feeling so good and not as worried about injury. Derek helped me take my fitness level beyond just a routine. I started working out every day and going to harder classes. Now Derek's athletic and educational back ground really started to shine. If you want to become an athlete Derek has what it takes. He has the exercise regiments, motivation, and nutritional knowledge to take you to the top level. In a short amount time I am lifting, squatting, and throwing more weight then I ever thought possible, Instead of just doing some regular push ups I can do them one arm, I can do one legged pistol squats, Pull ups with 24kg hanging from my waist. I can, I can, I can. I couldn't do this when I was twenty, never. And just for fun I competed in The 2009 Tactical Strength Challenge Contest. A couple of people have asked me what I am training for, all I can say is I am just having fun getting better.
Over the next two month my body literally changed before my eyes. Any fat I did have burned off of me like butter in a hot skillet. My physique is the best its ever been in my life. It's like I am the actor in a bad commercial for a five minute a day body blaster. It's all I can do to keep my wife's nails off of what she calls my eight or ten pack(The numbers different every time). Not bad for my FIRST FOUR month's at TNT Fitness, and all with a room, a Derek, and some funny looking lumps of metal.

Excellent Instructor and Motivator
Rated 9 out of 10
Derek holds his classes with a completely professional and welcoming attitude. He remembers your name, your goals and the last time you were at class. As an instructor he is always pushing students to the next level of fitness and very motivating throughout classes. After training with KB videos for several months, I found a live class and have only good things to say about it. My form has improved as well as my level of strength and confidence with the kettlebell. I notice as much (probably more) definition training with KB versus free weights (except it takes less time). I am challenged every day I step into class, with new moves, an improvement in my technique, and a completely different workout each day. I highly recommend this instructor for all levels of fitness and familiarity with kettlebells.

Results are Limitless
Rated 10 out of 10
I'll be honest that I thought TNT Fitness Results would be a short gig for me, but I was hooked. I did the treadmill and exercise bike and the videos through the years and really never stuck with one particular thing to keep in shape. I have a desk job, so it's important for me to stay fit.
I was the typical "jock" in high school and was very fit for volleyball, hurdling, running, and the shot put. I loved the weight room for my shot put training. Now doing what I do with kettlebells, it all makes sense why I liked it so much. I continued to play volleyball and softball after I married and moved to Fond du Lac, and one by one my body parts started to fail me. After a back surgery and two knee surgeries, I stopped playing softball, and slowed down on volleyball to eventually stopping that as well.
Having my fifth child at a later age of 44 really took a toll on my body. Something strange happened after I delivered which made my whole body hurt like fibromyalgia. After 2 years of doctoring the pain and medications I finally started to feel better as suddenly as I started to hurt. At about the same time I found out about Derek and Brandon and TNT Fitness Results. What could I lose but staying pain free, no more doctors or medicine?
Now, eight months later from starting at TNT, at 47, I feel absolutely great! I've toned my body and built muscle and have definition in my arms and legs, and even back in my abs, that I've never seen before. It's very flattering that people notice and tell me how good I'm looking, and can't believe I'm 47 with my oldest daughter being 24. I have more energy, which I need desperately, for my three old (my other trainer). He keeps me hopping and I need to stay healthy for him and the rest of my family as well as myself.
I look so forward to going to class, nothing of which I had felt in a long time. Derek is a very educated and dedicated trainer/instructor with his knowledge and encouragement and motivation. He really gets to know his clients inside and out. He keeps me in line and tells me that I can when I think I can't. He doesn't let me cheat myself. Each class is so different and challenging because he works the whole body, not just one area. That is so important, thus my results, so far. His nutrition knowledge is so helpful as well. I eat so much better and 10 pounds have dropped and one pants size. Derek is very proffessional and very passionate about his career. He leads by example and wants the best for everyone that they can be. I really wouldn't be where I am today without him and those attributes about him.
I am very fortunate to have become a part of kettlebells and TNT Fitness Results, and have made new friends along the way. Oh, and ladies, that little black dress that I bought this last summer doesn't only look good on the hanger..... it looks good on me now too! If that isn't an invitation to come and try TNT, I don't know what is.
