Help with the EBook Standard Installer.

Your logon (Win2000 & WinXP only) MUST have Administrator privileges. Under WinMe and Win98, the installation will also fail if it cannot write to the registry. This is often a problem with computers in businesses where (quite rightfully) management wishes to exercise control of what is installed on their property.

You can verify you have the necessary privileges by starting the installation program, noting the Input String, and exiting and restarting the program. If the Input String is different when the installation program is run a second time, you DO NOT have sufficient logon privileges to complete the installation. (Click here to see the installation program showing the Input String)

If you are not sure about your logon, check first because the installation will fail right at the end, after the OrderID is submitted and validated. This will use up the OrderID and the second install, with the required permissions will fail on a used OrderID. If this is your problem, check here.

Downloading and Installation Steps:

  1. You MUST select BOTH checkboxes asking about Acrobat Reader to start the download.

Both Checkboxes MUST BE SELECTED to Download

  2. Be Certain to select the "Save" Option. You can see the file name you are downloading (b10setupstd.exe)

Select the Save Option when asked

  3. Save the file somewhere you will remember. The location chosen by your computer's operating system (OS) may vary greatly depending on the software you have installed and the user you are logged in as. The following image shows the file being saved on the "Desktop" on WinXP.

Save the file somewhere you will remember

  4. The download may take several minutes depending on the speed of your connection.
When the download is complete, Run the installer by selecting Run from the dialogue box.

Select Run to start the installer

  5. Windows XP's security module may present an Unknown Publisher warning dialog like the one in the following image.
Select Run to start the installer.

Select Run to start the installer

  6. The Standard Installer requires manual authentication. You will need your Dragon Door Order ID from your email Order Confirmation as well as your Product ID and Input String from the Standard Installer setup dialog box.

You will need the Product ID and the Input String

  7. When you have all the information needed then please go to the Manual Authentication Page. Once you have completed the form, your authentication will be emailed to you.

Enter your Order ID, Product ID and the Input String

  8. Once you have received an email containing the Authorization String (a 9 character sequence of upper case letters), copy the string into the Publisher's Response entry box and click OK. You do NOT need to be on-line at this point.

    Enter the Authorization String

  9. Once validation is complete, select "OK" to complete the installation.

  10. Download and run the required Adobe plug-in installer which you can download here.

    Adobe Reader (current version) Plug-in
or Plug-in for older versions of Adobe Reader

  11. Locate your e-book (find the PDF file in the location where you saved it) and open the file with your Adobe Reader application.

Select the Save Options when asked

What can go wrong

1. I connected OK, got my Validation but when I clicked OK, the dialog box disappeared but my ebook never opened. Then I tried again and I got a message saying my OrderID was invalid - That it had been used before.

With Win2000 and WinXP, your logon must have administrator privledges to install an ebook. Other Windows operating systems may also restrict writing to the System Registry.

If you now have access to a User account with administrator privledges and want to redo the installation -
Email the webmaster and ask for a Renewal

2. I upgraded Acrobat (or Acrobat Reader) and now my ebook will not open. What should I do?

This problem is related to the plug-in used by Adobe Reader to decrypt your digital book. The solution depends on the version of Adobe Reader you are now using. We recommend using the latest version of Adobe Reader and the simple upgrade solution provided below.

Adobe Reader (current version)

Download and run the required plug-in installer (foClientInstaller.exe) which you can download here.

The plug-in installer will ask you to close Adobe Reader if it is open. Once the plug-in has been installed Adobe Reader will be able to decrypt your digital book.

Adobe Reader 5 or 6
The solution for these versions of Adobe Reader requires you manually install the plug-in in the appropriate plug-ins directory.

The file fOpen32.api must be in the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug_ins directory

Click here to download the FileOpen plug-in.
Save the file in the new Acrobat Reader plug-ins directory

When the download is complete, select the Close button.

Open Acrobat Reader and under Edit/Preferences/Startup make sure "Certified Plug-ins Only" is UNCHECKED.

Open your ebook by double clicking on the .pdf file in the directory where you saved the setup file

Make a shortcut on your desktop for the ultimate in ease of use. Right-click to open the context menu as follows:

3. I had to re-install Windows (or I upgraded Windows) and now Acrobat will not open my ebook.

Ebook authorization permissions are stored in the system registry. Re-installing or Upgrading can overwrite or corrupt the registry entries. - Email the webmaster and ask for a Renewal The renewal request should be sent from the email address used when the order was placed. The "From:" address of the email will be used to generate a new OrderID. If you no longer have access to that email address please email the webmaster with the details.
