Get the Skills to Live Longer, Stronger and Tougher—with RKC, Gus Petersen's Kettlebell Athletic Training (K.A.T.) Fitness System

You've seen kettlebell juggling before. Maybe even thrown a double helicopter, or tried your hand at an over-the-shoulder toss.

But unless you've landed a 35-lb double rotation "Phat-Boy" flip on the fly, or caught the rare glimpse of RKC Gus Petersen honing his game in the foothills outside Denver, you won't have seen anything quite like the Kettlebell Athletic Training (K.A.T.) Fitness System.

When it comes to kettlebell juggling, this is a whole different animal.

"It's not for the faint of heart," admits Petersen of the system he developed, which draws on the inherent athleticism of kettlebell training to turn workouts into a hard-core game that demands as much fortitude and tenacity as it does focus and skill.

This highly innovative system of kettlebell juggling—the first to incorporate two kettlebells, mobility, and various planes of motion into the mix—is designed to challenge practitioners mentally and physically while developing various components of athleticism that are essential to peak performance:
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Functional strength
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Mental focus
  • Mind-body synergy
  • Lightning-fast reflexes
  • Cat-like agility.
"There's definitely an edge to K.A.T. juggling that requires a taste for adventure and risk-taking—a willingness to push some boundaries and play outside the box, if you will," Petersen explains. "It's physically demanding on multiple levels, but the mental aspect adds an element of challenge that makes workouts feel more like sport than work. That's where your training becomes more about fun and less about drudgery—and that's when you start seeing serious results."

Drudgery is counterintuitive to Petersen and his company ProEdge Kettlebells, which places a premium on adventure.

Growing up in Colorado, Petersen skied, backpacked, and worked as a ranch hand and a carpenter, among other occupations, to fund his various adventures. His passion for highly challenging outdoor endeavors culminated with a stint in Nepal as an assistant Outward Bound instructor in 1979, an experience that would guide the path of his career from that point forward.

"Play hard. Get strong. Live adventurously. That's the philosophy I've lived my life by, and it's the concept I built my business on," says Petersen, for whom working at playing hard has long been a way of life.

"I'm over being cooped up in a gym. Life is short. I'm about getting out there and living it."

Petersen says working on ranches and job sites taught him the value of real work in building strength and endurance. "I'm not into spending hours a day in front of a mirror pumping iron or walking a treadmill," he says. "And I'm over being cooped up in a gym. Life is short. I'm about getting out there and living it."

Always drawn to innovative training methods that build true strength, Petersen became an early adopter of kettlebell training. He earned his RKC certification in 2004 and graduated with one of the seminal classes of RKC Level II instructors in 2005.

The results he experienced with kettlebells were unlike any he'd experienced with other strength-training methods, and he began using kettlebells exclusively with all of his clients. Results paid the bills. But it was the athleticism and playfulness of kettlebell juggling that really captured his imagination and got his creative juices flowing.

Kettlebell-less on a Hawaii vacation in 2007, he grew restless between surf days, resorting to "virtual workouts" to satisfy his growing passion for the art of kettlebell juggling. He began jotting down concepts and techniques, sketching out the juggling moves springing from his active imagination. Soon, he was getting up in the middle of the night to write down techniques as they came to him. "It was like opening the floodgates," he recalls. He spent the next two years writing, experimenting, and refining.

Three years and five DVDs later, the K.A.T. was ready to be unleashed.

"Like a lot of Americans, I can't help thinking beyond what is and exploring what could be," Petersen comments. "With a tool as versatile as the kettlebell, I've had a great time redefining what is possible with kettlebell juggling."

Although some would describe the K.A.T. Fitness System as extreme or hard-core, it is also artfully approachable. Petersen says he was determined to develop a system that anyone with commitment and perseverence could learn by watching and practicing diligently. To that end, he took care to base the system on a logical progression that builds skills gradually from the ground up.

"The K.A.T. Fitness System provides a clear, step-by-step progression that will safely enable you to improve your athletic skills, strength, and endurance while enhancing your mental focus and acuity," Petersen says. "Anybody can follow this system, and everyone can benefit from it."

Whether you're an elite athlete looking to gain a competitive edge, an amateur athlete seeking an effective way to enhance your sports performance, a true warrior in need of extreme skills, or a weekend warrior gearing up for your next challenging adventure, the K.A.T. Fitness System is designed to build the skills you need for living on the edge.

Rated 10/10 Never had so much fun while working out

By Federico Hong / San Jose, Costa Rica

Really, i love working out and i do so all the time, but after watching these DVDs the only thing i want to do is KBJ. Even when i feel tired, i want to work out because you dont think of it as "working out", it feels like a game. Im just starting out though, so i constantly drop it but my reflexes, agility and conditioning are getting noticeably better. I saw DVD #5 just as an inspiration to what i want to achieve eventually, but obviously you should start at the very beginning even if some of the drills seem obvious or easy (trust me,even a 12 kg. KB feels heavier when throwing it around). Gus Petersen is a great teacher and motivator, the scene is beautiful and really makes you want to go out there and live life. As i said before, its too early to tell about concrete results but ill be sure to post the follow up later. Regardless, im feeling better and im sure ill be on top of my game in no time. Just for an example, i practice Martial Arts and my coordination, peripheral view and reflexes have improved so much, i havent recieved a strong blow since i started out with this!!

Rated 10/10 A Must for Serious Kettlebell Enthusiasts

By Carol Anna / Denver, Colorado

If you're like me, you love traditional kettlebells. But if you're ready to go beyond to a new level of mental and physical conditioning, try Gus Petersen's DVD system. It's going to blow you away.

First, there's Petersen himself. He's a terrific teacher whose clear instruction and expert demonstration make learning this challenging system possible. He's also a visionary, who invented and perfected this powerful juggling system. You've gotta respect and admire him for that!

Then, there's the fact that each DVD is packed with techniques that build upon each other to ensure that you're ready for more advanced moves. Finally, the techniques themselves are absolutely amazing. When you try them yourself, your excitement and enthusiasm for kettlebells will skyrocket. And your level of fitness will, too. Mine did.

I can't wait to see where this system is going to take me!

Rated 10/10 FANTASTIC FOR ALL AGES

By N. Scott / Silverthorne, CO USA

This system is by far the most fun and most challenging way to improve your strength, flexibility, range of motion, and cardio-vascular endurance that I have seen. I have been involved in coaching, athletic training, and sports for most of my life, and until I met Gus Petersen, and he introduced me to Kettlebells, I was getting burned out with the traditional strength-training methodology. The K.A.T. System, with Gus's creative juggling routines, has rejuvenated my desire to stay fit and healthy - while making my workouts interesting.

These DVD's provide a very clear progression from the basic hand-to-hand techniques that are the foundation of this system, to the more advanced techniques that will challenge the most dedicated, hard-core athlete. This system is intended to motivate those that want their workouts to be exciting, challenging, and creative. This is not just about a physical exercise routine, but more about how you can challenge yourself mentally and physically at the same time. I'm 64 years old, and would recommend these DVD's to men and women of all ages.

Rated 10/10 You'll never be bored

By Kim Scaturro / Lakewood, CO

I have been working out with Gus for a year now. He always keeps it new and exciting. But now that his DVD series is available I am taking my kettlebell training to whole new level. The instruction is clear, concise and easy to follow and all the DVDs have so much information packed into each one. What Gus has done with the sport is nothing short of revolutionary.

I love the strength and cardiovascular stamina I have gained but what I am truly excited about is that I have found a work out routine that keeps my mind engaged and I never get bored. While a regular kettlebell routine is great, juggling is so much fun.

This program is truly amazing. How ever far you want to go this DVD series can take you-- from basic juggling to advanced-- and with Gus' knowledge and enthusiasm you'll look forward exercising!

Rated 9/10 Worth every penny

By Kristen McLaughlin / Vail, Colorado

These DVDs give a unique view of kettlebells and fun ways to use them. The first three DVD's have a lot of techniques that can be done without the bell leaving the hand and therefore are good DVD's to have to add to any kettlebell instructional DVD collection. The progressions are very appropriate. Gus is very clear in the instructions for each skill so it is easy to take notes while watching inside then practice outside. Even if you don't think you want to try juggling these DVD's show thinking outside the box and might just motivate you to try a little juggling. I highly recommend. If you have done some juggling and want to learn more advanced skills get DVDs two and three. If you really want to experience all the fun that you can have with juggling then get all five. If you already have the basic skills and can only afford one disc right now I would recommend the third disc. However, you will get hooked and you will want all of them. If you have limited or no experience with juggling then you must start with discs one and two. You will not have fun and probably injure yourself if you try the techniques in three, four, and five without mastering the basics.

Rated 10/10 This is a great set.

By Ernie Padilla / Denver, CO

I love doing kettlebells and I like to break up the "standard" workouts with some kettlebell juggling. I've had hands on instruction from RKC's (including Gus) and I've learned from the videos of the likes of Martone and Logan, so I wasn't too sure that I'd learn anything new. I am happy to say that any doubt has proven to be unfounded. This system can be used by a person who is brand new to kettlebell juggling or somebody who is already well experienced. He goes beyond the standard techniques and routines and has made it really challenging and diverse. A person could either use these DVD's to add some new material to an existing repertoire, or (preferably) go through them from start to finish and bring one's kettlebell juggling to a whole new level. These are not for the person who just watches videos and never puts them to use, but for the person who will apply the material, they are priceless! (and fun).

Rated 10/10 Train to calm lifes storms

By Sage Petersen / Durango

I read all the reviews previous to this one, and I agree that this KBJ (Kettlebell Juggling) system is physically and mentally grueling and growing, but nobody mentioned its way of calming chaos.

I have been studying martial arts for over 20 years now, and I'm always looking for balanced movement; a way to practice being on the razors edge of poised and graceful, and powerful and ferocious (calming chaos). I think I've found it.

The human being is an expertly designed entity of adaptation, and the KAT fitness system really brings it out. I don't know if there is any situation that could be more chaotic than human to human confrontation (maybe holiday shopping) that warrants the poised grace, and powerful ferocity that I mentioned earlier, but I feel that mimicking situations like this help us to find our deeper abilities. This KBJ system is the closest I have ever come to mimicking an uncontrolled situation where my hands have to act quicker than my eyes can see, my body has to move on angles that are natural and powerful, all the while keeping my body integrated and my mind calm and focused. It sounds like something for the elite "hardcore" athlete, but my favorite part is that like martial arts the progression is naturally pieced together. As one's skill increases, so does their rythem and what they fit into their rythem. It comes down to efficiency, something we all want in all aspects of our lives and KAT delivers.

Rated 10/10 Kettlebell training has changed my life

By Paige O'Brien / Denver, CO

I've been utilizing Gus Peterson's K.A.T. ftness techniques for the last 7 years and have had lasting results. I suffered from chronic back pain and since I've started working out with the KAT program, I've improved my core strength and have significantly reduced my chiropractic visits from monthly to 2X a year! I can keep up with my kids and feel stronger now than I did in my 20's!!
