Master Zhongxian Wu was born on China’s eastern shore in the city of Wenlin in Zhejiang Province, where the sun’s rays first touch the Chinese mainland. He began practicing Qigong, calligraphy, and Taiji at an early age. Inspired by the immediate strengthening effects of this practice, Master Wu committed himself to the life-long pursuit of the ancient arts of internal cultivation. He devoted himself to the study of Qigong, martial arts, Chinese medicine, Yijing science, Chinese calligraphy, and ancient Chinese music over the next thirty years, studying with some of the best teachers in these fields.

Master Wu is the lineage holder of four different schools of Qigong and martial arts:

18th generation lineage holder of the Mt. Wudang Dragon Gate style of Qigong (Wudang Longmen Pai)
8th generation lineage holder of the Mt. Emei Sage/Shaman style Qigong (Emei Zhengong)
7th generation lineage holder of the Dai Family Heart Method style of Xin Yi (Dai Shi Xinyi Quan)
12th generation lineage holder of the Wudang He style of Taijiquan.

In China, Master Wu served as Director of the Shanxi Province Association for Somatic Science and the Shaanxi Association for the Research of Daoist Nourishing Life Practices. In this capacity, he conducted many investigations into the clinical efficacy of Qigong and authored five books and numerous articles on the philosophical and historical foundations of China’s ancient life sciences. Since he began teaching in 1988, Master Wu has instructed thousands of Qigong students, Eastern and Western.

In 2001, Master Wu left his job as an aerospace engineer in Xi’an, China, to come to the United States to teach Qigong. For four years he served as Senior Instructor and Resident Expert of Qigong and Taiji in the Classical Chinese Medicine Department at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) in Portland, Oregon. In addition to his work at NCNM, Master Wu was a sub-investigator in a 2003 Qigong research program sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Currently, Master Wu presents trainings and workshops for professionals and the general public in Qigong and Taiji and on topics related to the classical Chinese arts. Vital Breath of the Dao—Chinese Shamanic Tiger Qigong (Laohu Gong) is Master Wu’s first Qigong book in English.

I received this DVD just a couple of days ago and am truly amazed about the production quality which is rare for Qigong media I have bought in the past. Master Wu's forms will take me a while to learn as they are so different from what I have learnt before. Just watching Master go through the forms forces you to get up and practice them. I am looking forward to completing them even though it may take me a while. I have purchased the book together with the DVD so that when I dont have the opportunity to watch the DVD I can take the book up when a spare minute and imbibe the rules. Have tried many qigong forms and none excites my
interest to start than these!.

This DVD is a work of art in itself. The first part shows a "dance" that expresses the beauty and peace of Qiqong movements. Then each movement is explained with the performer going through each step. It is beautiful! Just watching it brings you home to the present.

Master Wu is a beautiful practicioner of Qi Gong. The DVD has high production quality and shows clearly a number of exercises. The music is relaxing and the movement is inspiring. Anyone who watches this must learn primarily through imitating the video. The auditory "instruction" doesn't tell you what to do. It consists of a history of QiGong, and helpful tips on the speed or quality of movement. I want a description of the movement such as "Bend your knees, Lift your hand" so I can tell what to do. The instructor moves so fast I have no idea what to do!

Qigong is not a simple art, requiring focus and strength. The video does an adequate job going through all the forms, but not enough time is spent slowly showing each form precisely. This approach is equivalent to how most martial arts programs work, but it can be a bit disorienting in video where you can't look at things from as many angles as you'd like and there is not an instructor handy to correct your technique.

When I ran the DVD for the first time, I sat down in an "okay, show me" frame of mind. Seated for all of 30 seconds, interest soared and I rose to participate in my first Chinese Shamanic Tiger Qigong lesson. That was a week ago, and each day I've repeated the process. Master Zhongxian Wu brings incredible nuance in portraying the tiger. Also notable are front, side, back camera angles, hypnotic musical score, and a very seductive narration by John DuCane.

I thought when ordering I would give it a try ( why not ).I looked all over the net for a tai chi teaching dvd and this is the one I picked to try out,you know without being out a bunch of money and I didn't want some girl/guy showing me there version of tai chi I wanted real old world stuff and this is it.
Even though I didn't think that slow moving would be much good. After two times with this dvd, I know it's the good stuff and is going to be a great part of my life for a while.I am 50 years old and haven't worked out in years and I wanted to start slowly and build up to it.I was looking for flexibilty in my work out not just lifting or push up / pull ups.this really made me feel better after one try. the teacher shows you how it's done front and side views and tells you why your doing it.so if your new to this tai chi stuff buy this dvd.I can see doing this for a long time to come. Great Qigong DVD

This is a great form that is really good for the shoulders. Makes an excellent warm up for more vigorous exercise or a good stand alone routine for building energy (dont do it at night!).
It seems complex at first but if you have any experience you can pick it up rather quickly.

For more than a decade of qigong practice, the Shamanic Tiger Qigong DVD is the best one that I ever watched; it is possible to feel the tigers’s suppleness and strenght while observing master Wu performing the movements. As far as I can perceive, it has been produced with an artistic preoccupation without forsaking the quality of the information it is supposed to deliver.

According to my point of view, it is not possible to pack all the visual and theorical/technical information concerning a so elaborated qigong form on a single DVD. Nevertheless, the Dragondoor’s team realized a prowess providing us with an excellent overview of this little known qigong form.

For those, like me, interested by the movements’ medical benefits, there is plenty of commentaries about that aspect according to classical chinese medicine. Visualisations and internal attitude are well explained. Technical description of the movements could have been more detailed by the narrator which is doing a good job but the companion book may remediate to this little lack.

In guise of conclusion, that’s not a surprise that this qigong form might be excellent for spiritual, psychological and physical health.

A DVD to watch again, again and again. No doubt that it gives the taste to go to enroll in a workshop with master Wu.
