Iron Tamer Dave Whitley

Old-School Training for the 21st Century

Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is strong, Yes a man of
knowledge increases strength;

Old-timers of the iron game knew how to maximize their bodies, squeezing out every possible ounce of functional strength. Looks, while a consideration, were secondary. Just look at men like Arthur Saxon and Eugen Sandow. These were men of exceptional strength as well as ideal proportion. They knew that without strength, muscle was just in the way.

Sadly, somewhere along the way this idea was lost. The "Jolly Game of Taming Iron" describe by Russian Olympic lifter Yuri Vlasov has given way to the chrome machines and color-coded Ken-and-Barbie dumbells of today.

Following the lead of Pavel Tsatsouline, Iron Tamer is about reclaiming our past. If you are looking for discussion about the latest super-supplement, elliptical machines or muscle isolation techniques, this is not the place for you. What you will find here is products and services for:

I am David Whitley, Master RKC Instructor,CK-FMS and professional performing strongman. The Iron Tamer.

I reside and train athletes and individuals just like YOU in Nashville, TN.

What is an RKC Master Instructor?

From Dragon Door: Master RKCs are appointed after extensive experience as a Senior RKC and after demonstrating the highest levels of integrity, commitment, teaching skills, leadership and personal physical ability. Master RKCs are the only RKCs with the authority to teach Dragon Door approved RKC certification workshops on their own.

What is CK-FMS?

It stands for Certified Kettlebell Functional Movement Specialist and it means that I am certified in Gray Cook?s Functional Movement Screen (a ranking and grading system scientifically created to document movement patterns that are key to normal function) and the corrective Kettlebell exercises that relate to the FMS.

I conduct Kettlebell workshops across the country and train clients in the Nashville area. I am also available for internet and phone consultation and personalized program design.

I have worked to help hundreds of clients reach their fitness goals. These clients include:

Multiple College and Professional Football and Baseball Teams and the US Military. These are the exception however. Mostly I work with ordinary people who are sick of being overweight, out of shape and feeling like they are not experiencing life to the fullest. People who want to MOVE better, FEEL better and LOOK better.

I am the author of two Kettlebell DVDs Power Circuit Workout, and Full Body Power.

I have appeared on sevreal TV shows as both an RKC and a perfoming strongman and I have been interviewed for or featured in multliple publications including Nashville Lifestyles, Nashville Rage, Wall street Journal, and have written articles for several magazines.

Visit www.irontamer.com for more info and to getcha a FREE copy of my eBook 101 Kettlebell Workots.

"A very competent and capable kettlebell instructor, David Whitley will make you a better man or woman." -Pavel Tsatsouline, the author of The Russian Kettlebell Challenge

10/10 David's WV Workshop (6/23/07)

By Scott A. Lowther / Hurricane, WV. USA

I just got completed a KB Workshop with RKC David Whitley. All I can say is WOW! Not only was Dave able to improve my technique, he was also able to give me the tools to increase my poundage in several lifts. With this new found knowledge, I was also able to perform moves I had never done before. All of this in only 6 hours.

Another thing that impressed me about Dave was his ability to take people with no KB experience and make them swing, snatch, press, get up etc. I learned just as much from watching Dave teach raw beginners as I did when he was giving me personal instruction. If you ever have the chance to train with Dave......DO IT!

10/10 W.Va. Workshop 23 June 2007

By Mike Barber / St. Albans, WV USA

I was extremely pleased with David's workshop. He is an excellent instructor and his easygoing sense of humor made it fun. I learned a lot, as did the other students, some of whom had never touched a kettlebell. I highly recommend David for quality instruction.

10/10 Simply THE BEST

By Naina Bhasin, RKC / Iowa City, IA USA

I have known David for a little over a year and in that time my strength, conditioning and body composition have improved substantially--so much so that with David's encouragement and support I became RKC certified in April!

David has the unique ability to quickly assess your strengths and weaknesses and then provides clear, concise instruction on how to improve your technique. Every time I interact with David, I learn something new. He is constantly researching and learning in order to provide his clients with the best experience possible.

While I lived in Nashville, I worked with David one-on-one and attended his bootcamps (AWESOME) and workshops. When I had to re-locate, David designed programs tailor-made for me which continued to produce amazing results. At the end of each program cycle, I consistently exceeded the goals we had outlined together, including my RKC preparation.

Within minutes of meeting David, I could sense his passion and knew he would be the right person to help champion my goals. After attending the RKC and having the opportunity to learn from the top instructors in the country, it is clear that David belongs in the upper echelon of this inspiring group.

10/10 Hard Training with a Knowledgable Instructor

By Yasser Helmi / Atlanta, GA USA

I spent an hour and a half with David. He help me fine tune my technique in several of the core kettlebell lifts and then took me through a punishing but rewarding workout. It was time well spent, the next time I am in Nashville, I will train with David again. He knows his stuff and makes it fun!

10/10 GBA

By Tabitha Dearle / Perth, Australia

You would think that when an instructor starts by telling you that he is going to demoralize you that it is going to be an awful session, how wrong my initial thought was.

I am commencing training up to do the RKC in St Paul in April 2012 and I had the opportunity to book in a one-on-one session with Dave whilst he was in Australia doing the HKC. I started off with showing him my swing which needed some refining and after that he had me laying on the floor going through rolling patterns which I had never done and explained that this is something we learn as babies and I had obviously forgotten.

After this and doing some hip flexor stretching we are back into swings. The heaviest kettlebell I have ever swung with both hands was 24kg, I am female and 73kg (about 160lb). By the end of the session I was swinging the Beast! I never ever imagined that would happen.

Dave explains everything so concisely and has such faith in what is possible that it just happens! I sincerely hope that our paths cross again so that I can learn more from this great man!

10/10 HKC Workshop, West Haven CT

By Douglas Davidson / Larchmont, United States of America

I couldn't be more happy having had the chance to learn from the Irontamer himself. I've never had a better instructor for anything else I've ever done. The knowledge he had to share was absolutely amazing and the way he taught it was fantastic. Having had the opportunity to do such a workshop with such an instructor I have every intention of moving forward in the world of the kettlebell!!Thanks again!

10/10 The Main Reason Why I am Going for RKC

By Anthony Renna / White Plains, NY, USA

Dave was my instructor for the HKC and because of his incredible instruction, I decided to pursue the RKC, which I had no intention of doing originally. I was very impressed at the level of instruction he provided, and really gained a new respect for coaching and teaching. It motivated me to elevate my own coaching, not only with kettlebells, but overall. It doesn't get much better than Dave!

orem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.orem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. 10/10 HKC Revisited

By Ralph A. Salamone / Norwalk CT.

I recently attained my HKC cert. in Fairfield CT with David Wnitley as the lead instructor. I was amazed at David's overall knowledge of the entire scope of the sport and his ability to instruct us in a language and demeanor that we could all benefit from. Even at an event such as the HKC there was a wide range of abilities and experince in the students. He made all of us feel like he was talking directly to us with his attention to detail and firm yet understanding approach. We all left there thinking the RKC was right around the corner.
My only regret as I left the workshop was that I couldn't bottle all his pearls of wisdom and bring it back as needed, Well guess what, I can!!! I just purchased his Stongamn and Get-Up DVD's and I felt like I was back at the HKC!! There he was breaking down the get-up to it's simplest forms and interspersing quotes from Thoreau to Pavel! Just great!
I have been a teacher all my life and I know a great instructor when I see one. That would be David Whitley!

10/10 Strong"er"

By Dawne Taylor / Summit, MS

While in Nashville, I got the opportunity to train under David. His patience, expertise, and challenges were much appreciated. He assessed, found the weak link and had me working to improve it. He pushed me to set a PR and be an overall stronger me! As I continue to correspond and train under David, I know I am not only getting stronger, but will be ready for any future challenges. :)

HAND STRENGTH: What Is It and Why Do YOU Need It?

Aug 25, 2011 01:00 PM

Why are strong hands important? Because your hands are the portal to your strength, the thing that connects you to your kettlebell, barbell, golf club, tennis racket, opponent or bag of groceries. Without your hands you cannot express your strength in the majority of sports. Even in a sport like soccer, which is hands-off, the athlete must have a connection to a barbell or similar implement to develop strength. So what does it mean to have a strong grip?

Practice- Honing the Skill of Strength

Jun 08, 2011 11:00 PM

I once read a quote from Houdini that really struck me with its depth. “Magic is practice” The simple honest elegance is so obvious it is easy to dismiss. Strength is the same. Strength is practice. Strength is a by-product of continual practice. The quest for the perfect rep. And that practice begins with movement. “Practice makes perfect” is inaccurate and so is “perfect practice makes perfect”. While this sounds very good and is a step in the right direction, it is also untrue.
